Nice Quiet Apartments Next to Two Trails!!

I have lived at Decatur Highland for almost 3 years and I have enjoyed my time here. I really appreciate the ability to walk out of my apartment and have two trails I can easily access. I have even walked to campus through Lullwater park (~30-45 minutes depending where your classes are on campus).

Experience so far has been good. We got a good price for an okay length of rent and because we worked with someone in the office to help make the apartment work for us. Otherwise, these apartments were expensive. The value of ours is higher because it's a renovated unit. Not all are renovated units (new kitchen appliances, floors, bathroom countertops). I love that I do not hear the sounds of the road from my building. This apartment complex is next to Clairmont Ave and there are a lot of ambulances on this road so the noise could be bothersome if you get an apartment near the road. There are 2 pools and both are nice. The gym is ...eh. It's very minimal. But it's currently getting upgraded (January 2023) after pipemageddon destroyed the pipes and the gym. The location is perfect if you are an Emory student. You can walk to the Emory bus stop (10-15 minutes) or you can walk to campus through Lullwater park. There are 2 Publixes less than 5 minutes away. Toco hills plaza is 5 minutes away. Downtown Decatur ~10 minutes away. Piedmont park ~20-25 minutes away. This location is super great. There is plenty of parking in the apartment complex. They are not super strict on having guest vehicles. However, there is no covered parking anywhere. Aside from wishing my apartment was cheaper, it is the perfect apartment for my partner and I.

It's pretty good

It's a nice complex and I like my unit. The management is nice and responsive. The gates are frequently broken, and people always tailgate behind cars to get into the gate which is a security issue. There also isn't a lot of parking spots (you'll find one, it may just be far away from your building). In terms of value, I think its overpriced but I guess it's because of how close it is to campus. There isn't necessarily anything unique about it compared to other complexes I've seen. The gym was crap, but they're re-doing it so hopefully it'll be better.

Easy commute not awful staff

All of the staff is friendly and service requests are handled promptly. The gate breaks frequently and of course the apartments are slightly overpriced but they are nice with updated amenities. When pipes burst they paid for us to have a general gym membership rather than leave us hanging. They have required valet trash and a pool as well. I walk/bike to SOM and it's super easy going through lullwater so I don't have to cross any roads until I am on campus and is about a 35 minutes walk/15 minute bike.

Better now, thanks to new management

I moved in toward the end of July, subletting from an Emory student. Originally I had several issues because the management was completely unresponsive. They wouldn't respond to emails, never answered the phone, and the door to the leasing office was closed. If you managed to catch a worker outside, they'd say something about being many days behind on emails before rushing in.

Last fall, they came under new management. Under Cortland, things greatly improved. For one, they worked to actually fulfill maintenance requests and welcomed residents to give feedback/ask questions. They repainted the apartments and redid some of the landscaping. There are regular update emails (and texts, if you signed up for them), and there are even some events to reach out to the residents. You get updates when your maintenance request is initiated and when it's fulfilled. The staff is quite personable overall and very responsive.

When I was first living here, I was certain I'd move out. Now, I'm considering possibly staying another year. Although I'd want a unit closer to the leasing office. You can tell that the units all the way at the top of the hill (building 14 or 15, for example) were neglected and built hastily compared to some of the ones further down the hill.

Note that there are no elevators or covered parking.

Convenient and Affordable

Highland Lake Apartments - recently changed name to Decatur Highlands. The price is very good for the amount of space, and the location is very convenient to both Emory , Lullwater, and Peachtree Creek trail. Management can vary, and it can be noisy at times.

Getting around North Druid Hills

North Druid Hills Reviews

It's a prime location for getting around the city! I can get to midtown, Decatur, inman park, etc. in about a 20 min drive or less. The drive to school each morning is about 10-15 mins with little to no traffic. The area is safe with tons of restaurants and shopping. The only downside is that it's not close to any prime nightlife scene, but Ubers aren't too expensive. Incredibly safe which is something I was looking for as a woman living alone. There's no perfect place, but for the amount of space I have (850 sq ft), safety, proximity to school, and easy access to other areas in the city, it can't be beat.
North Druid Hills is a lovely neighborhood and one that I am happy to be living in as my first exposure to Atlanta. There are beautiful tree lined streets and its proximity to Emory is a great selling point.
Beautiful houses and trees, calm, quiet community.
It's an open area with trees. Very close to Emory campus as well as the Toco Hills plaza (Kroger, Publix, many restaurants). Further down Clairmont at the intersection with North Decatur road, there's another Publix as well as some other restaurants in the plaza.

Golden Drop Cafe--which has outdoor seating incase the pandemic is still uncontrolled when you read this--is just 3 min. down the road. Mason Mill Park, which has tennis courts, a pavillion, and walking trails, is also very near.
Very convenient location as far being somewhat close to a lot of different areas though it itself isn't where the night life or all the best restaurant areas are. Lots of grocery options very close by, including Whole Foods, Krogers and Publix.
My wife and I love walking through the beautiful homes in the local neighborhood. It is a very safe area even at night.
You can find any type of store or restaurant that you would ever need within a 5-15 minute drive.
My wife and I go on walks around sunset most nights through the neighborhood. Have never felt unsafe. Neighbors are all very friendly along our walks. Lots of beautiful homes to gawk at.
