Clean, Friendly Staff, Quiet and Importantly Safe!

As a law student, given that Monroe House Condominium is reachable within 5 minutes, saves me time and effort. Whole Foods, Tonic, CVS, Starbucks, Au Bon Pain, Foggy Bottom Metro - everything needed convenience is within a 1-2 mile radius. Worked very well for me especially during the snowstorm. The staff, although not present 24 hours, are courteous, kind and friendly. Some of the elderly neighbors are quite sweet and helpful too :)

The noise is minimal to none, from the streets or in the building itself. All in all would recommend it highly to any student for share or independent as it has comparatively the most economic leasing rates together with all the above conveniences.

Monroe House is Meh

If you're going to be paying $1500-$1600 for a studio in Foggy Bottom, living in the Monroe House is the least pleasant way to spend it.

1. The facilities are old and poorly-maintained. The only real amenity is the coin-operated laundry downstairs. I have not gone more than three months at a time without all of the machines going out of commission (for a week at a time) due to pending repairs. I would not complain about old facilities (because it is what it is) if it were not for the fact that a studio costs the same here as it does in buildings that properly maintain their facilities.

2. You will get your packages (but only if you happen to catch the one part-time building maintenace guy on your way in or out). The (one) staff does not keep regular hours. As someone who leaves shortly before 9 AM and returns around dinner, I have had to wait over a week on several occassions for packages that arrived, including prescription medications. I have also had to go into the package room myself to prove to the maintenance guy that I actually had a package in there. He does not keep a record of incoming packages (though he will sign for them) because he says that "he remembers." I have brought this system to my landlord's and building management's attention and they have no intention of changing anything.

3. There is currently construction going on across the street next to the Red Cross building (but on 21st st.). Construction usually begins at 6-6:30 AM on weekdays, which, to be honest, has been a nice "natural" alarm clock.

4. Lots of natural light if you're situated on the 21st st. side.

5. Fortunately, I have only lost hot water in the morning a few times over the past six months.

6. You're close to campus. Be aware that you are on the part of campus that is the farthest from either the Farragut West or Foggy Bottom metro stations (though still only a 12 min walk).

7. Great water pressure from the sinks and shower.

Management can have better staff on site

Generally while the building is old, it's still is decent shape. The lobby and the entrance is clean, as is the laundry to some extent. However, the trash areas need to be kept more clean and odor free. The staff that receives packages and is responsible to ensure that the water to the building, and heating/cooling etc. works well could really use a course on being available and more helpful. You have to ask for packages repeatedly, the water supply is disrupted without notice and if the heating or cooling has a problem, it takes a while for it to be fixed. There is also no light on the roof, making it difficult to enjoy the terrance after 4:00pm in winter.

Good Value of Money

This is a good place to stay for 1-2 years in terms of location, value, transportation availability and places near by i.e. White House, World Bank, State Dept, Dupont Circle and Georgetown etc. The building is clean and safe.
Negative Aspects: frequent unexpected water outage , the building manager is lazy, rude and usually out of the office, delay in receiving mail package and lenient smoking policy.

Management needs to wake up

The apartment management will switch off water without informing the residents and sometimes there is no hot water. You also rarely get your packages on time because the person in charge of receiving them does not want you going into the room to look for them but will not remember to tell you he has received any packages for you. Perhaps a system where they should put a you've got mail chit in your mailbox will be a good idea. building is very old so plumbing has a lot of problems and makes a lot of nice randomly. the cupboard doors are old too and perpetually hang. Unless the apartment is fully renovated (which ours is not) it could be described as basic at best. Location to GWU makes it worth the issues and the rent is not very high. Other locations around the area have a comparable rent though so they should be looked at as well if someone is looking to move into this area. We did do that but chose this location because of the landlady who is a nice person.

Management needs an overhaul

The Monroe House has a wonderful location, however the management is terrible. They routinely shut off water without informing the residents, sometimes for minutes but usually for hours! It might be the hot water or just the entire water supply for reasons which are not communicated to the tenant. The centrally controlled heating and air conditioning is also not great. The heating had issues during the winter and would be shut without notice. The air conditioning is switched on much too late in the summers. The on-site manager, Wallace is rude and unresponsive. He routinely agrees that he should inform residents of any maintenance work beforehand, but does not do so. He also has a tendency to keep your mail and packages in the mailroom and forget about them. He will then insist that he has not received anything. After forgetting about a Television and five packages this past 10 months, which were then found by the tenant, he had resorted to being rude with anyone who decides to walk into the mailroom to check for packages which they have been informed have arrived but which he is unaware of. Otherwise, minus the water, temperature and receipt of mail issue, the plumbing is old, you can hear pipes in your room, the walls are thin, and there are insects to be seen randomly in the building. The laundry machines which are in the basement are also very old and at least one of four machines is out-of-order. So if the laundry eats up your cash, no problem, just another thing the management forgot to do: put a sign that its not working! If you can afford to pay even $100 more in rent, try the President, the Empire or the Statesman, which are also in the same area.

Awesome condos, but the staff isn't very friendly

My particular apartment was recently renovated, with an awesome landlord, and was FULLY furnished as part of the rent. This is not typical. It was pretty awesome.

I just want people to know that the management of Monroe House, like the management of the Aston, is utter bullshit for what you're paying. Particularly at Monroe house, good luck ever getting your packages. There's no system for distributing packages, it's just whatever the elderly front door guy remembers (when he's actually there, they're almost impossible to find even during business hours). Even if you KNOW you have a package, he'll likely tell you that you don't have one. Then you'll insist on checking the pile of people's packages he hoards in the office, and MAGICALLY you'll find yours and he'll just harrumph and go back to sitting on a chair in the lobby. Don't bother talking to him about it - he's not interested in communicating to people they have packages. If you shop online and get things delviered, or want to receive things people send you, don't live here.

Great value near GW Law School

The Monroe House is a wonderful value for students looking to live near GW Law School. The building is convenient to campus, the Metro, and Whole Foods, and is affordable compared to similar buildings in the Foggy Bottom area.

Love this area, right near Logan Circle and 14th street which has so much good food and nightlife!
Amazing neighborhood. Close to GW and close to so much good food and nice restaurants.
Sometimes noisy, but the front desk quickly deal with it if you ask
Great, Safe neighborhood with great food and close to campus.
Foggy Bottom/West End are great for 1Ls -- you will get to know the area around school and you will be conveniently within a few blocks of GW. There are a lot of food options, but night life is lacking (though you're a short walk to DuPont and Georgetown). There are plenty of busses and metros around.
Good only in the sense that it is near the school, that you can receive warnings from the school and D.C. (if signing up), that you can be assured of safety generally even if coming in late due to pulling off night studies in the library. However, noise levels are high, so you can hardly study indoors at home because of people wanting to earn money in exchange for their loud and terrible performances. This means that you may ultimately end up outside for work or rest during morning/afternoon. Noise in the evening can be high too due to some people having gone drunk. Noise (some loud trucks and mostly machine sounds) and lights can be too much for sleeping deeply.
It's really only convenient because of how close the law school is. Otherwise, I would not live here. Definitely a business/corporate area that shuts down on the weekends. Not a lot of options for going out to eat unless it's either overpriced or fast food. The only grocery store that's walking distance is Whole Foods, which I personally hate shopping at.
The Aston is the furthest GW housing from the campus, so we had to walk more than any other student to get to class. We are also the furthest away from any Metro station, but still not considerably far when you look at the big picture. There are grocery stores, bars, and restaurants nearby which is a perk, but it is pretty noisy around here. But I guess that's anywhere in Downtown DC. There are always cars honking, ambulance sirens, etc. But the area seems pretty safe.
