Manayunk
Small Town Charm on the Edge on Philly
Just outside Center City lies Manayunk, a charming neighborhood with an urban feel. This Native American word means "where we to go drink", which references the Schuylkill River that runs near it. These days it could also stand for the vibrant nightlife that draws visitors from all over the Delaware Valley. Manayunk's main thoroughfare, aptly named "Main Street" is bustling with scores of local restaurants, desginer boutiques, lively bars, and art galleries. Many long standing events occur throughout the year, like the Manayunk Arts Festival, the Manayunk StrEAT Food Festival, and Restaurant Week. Cycling is also big in this neighborhood - bikers frequently take on its hilly roads, particularly "The Wall."
The median age of Manayunk residents is 31 years old. The area is home to a much younger crowd - early professionals, graduate students, and some families and multigenerational residents. The real estate market is also varied - industrial row homes, trendy lofts, contemporary townhouses, and single Victorians line its hilly streets. The SEPTA Regional Rail makes it easy to get to and from the city, so why wait any longer to experience the allure of Manayunk?

Manayunk —

I really like living in Manayunk. As an avid runner, I am able to live about a block from the Towpath along the river, and about a five minute walk to the Bala Cynwyd Heritage Trail, both of which are wonderful for running, walking, and biking. Before the pandemic, my roommates and I frequently went out to eat in our neighborhood, since Manayunk is packed with lots of great bars and restaurants. The only downside is that we are far enough from campus and Center City that making plans with law school friends who live in more central locations requires some coordinating in terms of drivers or rideshare services. However, the savings in rent more than make up for what I spent on Ubers meeting friends in Center City before the pandemic. Commuting to campus from Manayunk is relatively easy, especially with a car, though I do know classmates here that rely on public transportation.

Many bars and restaurants. Great /happy hour and late-night specials. Young people and families alike. Lots of gyms and local running/biking trails. Very bike-friendly neighborhood. Convenient to the regional train line (connection to Center City) and several bus routes. Also close to Wissahickon transportation center (connections to other neighborhoods). No local grocery stores.

Up and coming town that is popular with many undergraduate and graduate students. While not comparable to center city, the dining and bar scene is flourishing and gives you a wide variety of options to choose from, whether you are looking for a date night or a happy hour to blow off some steam. Regional rail stops make it easy to get to Philadelphia and Uber has a fairly strong presence in the area. One of the biggest drawbacks though is that parking can be extremely limited if you do not have a reserved spot and get back late at night.

I grew up in Manayunk/Roxborough and I love it. Its out of center city but not a terrible commute, and its a great neighborhood to plein air paint. Usually it takes 20 minutes on the bus on a good day, some days it can take up to 45 minutes if there is traffic which can be annoying.
