Cleveland Heights
"A Lively Culture and Arts Haven"
Conveniently located 20 minutes from Downtown, 5 minutes from Case Western Reserve University, John Carroll University and Notre Dame College, nearby airports, hospitals, medical centers and more! Cleveland Heights has 135 acres of beautiful land such as, Barbara H. Boyd Park, Cain Park, Cumberland Park, Denison Park and Forest Hill Park. Known as hub for arts and culture, theaters and galleries are abundant in the area including a popular arts festival held every summer at Cain Park. Housing options include historic architecture featuring mansions and more modern large apartment complexes fit for students, young professionals, or families. Public transportation is limited so most residents travel by car.
Cleveland Heights has a range of restaurants and bars offering diverse cuisines and atmospheres. You might find cozy, neighborhood pubs, trendy cocktail bars, wine bars, and even live music venues. Be sure to try Bottlehouse Brewing Company, Christopher's Pub and Fairmount Cocktail Bar and The Stone Oven. Cleveland Heights, being a suburb, might offer a more laid-back and relaxed nightlife compared to the bustling downtown areas of larger cities. This could be appealing to those seeking a quieter yet engaging evening out.

7.9/10 Rating
(based on 221 neighborhood reviews)
I have lived there over 2 years, and there has only been one incident of a serious safety issue since I've been there. It is around a lot of bars, but no one has made me feel unsafe walking to and from my car at night, which is located in a parking garage across the street. In the winter, the roads are usually cleared of snow quickly and salted regularly.

Coventry has a lot of charm. There are some decent places to grab food, and it is a pretty walkable neighborhood overall. It's quite close to campus, but there can be a decent amount of traffic and noise in the area.

I have a lot of friends who live nearby, and it's really easy to go see them. There's a grocery store within walking distance and lots of shops, including a bookstore. I also really like the fact there's a community garden on my street. The neighborhood has excellent public transit (3 buses run by my apartment, for example), and is a 30 minute walk from Case.
It is more expensive to live in Coventry than Little Italy, but it feels much safer, and parking is a lot easier. Keep reading
The Palmetto
This is a great spot for people who want to be near a community of graduate students without living in a huge apartment complex. It's less than a 5 minute walk to groceries, coffee, and banks. Also a prime location for meeting up with friends for wings, tacos, or margaritas during happy hour! Running and biking in the neighborhood is very common. I feel safe walking home at night and think it is the perfect distance from school - not too far but not too close!

I love living in Coventry/Cleveland Heights. Most of the time I walk to school (~20 mins), which my cherished time to listen to music and mentally get ready for the day. Recently, I have been carpooling with a friend because of the weather. I adore being so close to Coventry and I often will walk over to get delicious Phoenix coffee or takeout on a weeknight. All of my closest M1 friends are within a 5-10 minute walk. I am also a 5 min drive from Cedar/Fairmount (which has more delicious food and Luna Bakery). I feel very safe and I appreciate the cozy aesthetic of the area. I am also only a 10 min drive from University heights (Whole foods, UPS, First Watch, PetSmart, Target, Dunkin Donuts).

It's very close to campus and all the hospitals. It's quiet. There is a grocery store a couple blocks away and it's not a short distance (~10-15 mins depending on your driving) to the main Target/ Walmart/ Macy's/ Whole Foods/etc. complex and also the same distance in the opposite direction to get to downtown Cleveland. In my opinion the area is safe.

Very safe neighborhood. Up a hill from the CWRU campus, so it definitely feels off-campus, and a bit removed (in a good way). Lots of apartments and houses. Popular with med students. Good shops and proximity to other central areas (Little Italy, Cedar Fairmont)

It's nice to be close to Little Italy, Cedar Fairmount and Coventry, however since they closed down the closest Marcs there isn't really a grocery store you can walk to. I like being able to walk to many places and the neighborhood seems nice enough. My boyfriend's car did get broken into (window smashed) in the city lot we park in though.

From the perspective of someone that lives alone, neighborhood seems overpriced due to location advantage. If you look for an apartment that is renovated for 1 person, look at studios for affordable options. If you need space living on your own, prepare to pay for over $1000. I have not felt unsafe in the neighborhood. Then again, I don't wander the streets on foot past 7pm. Its optional to have a car because downtown is easy to get to using the RTA pass from CWRU and the train station is walking distance. If you like window shopping, you need a car because shopping areas are typically away from public transportation (i.e. strip malls). Overall I would recommend living in Little Italy if you have a roommate or family that can help make a renovated apartment affordable by splitting costs. If you don't mind living in a non-renovated unit on your own where you could be at risks of a broken A/C or heater due to age or pest control issues then you have availability to more affordable options for living alone in this area.

Feels safe. Walkable. Lots of restaurants and shops, parking for visitors. Lots of stops for free shuttles and RTA transportation. i think rent around there tends to be higher though because of the location. library near by. I can walk to school but doesnt always feel safe when walking down or up the hill to Little Italy. My drive is only five minutes. Before I had a reliable car, I mostly took the shuttle when I didn't want to walk. Shuttles come every twenty to 45 minutes. It depends on the line and the time of day.

The Cedar-Fairmount area is convenient and safe for student housing. However, recent out of state investors purchases of apartment complexes in the area have cause significant increase in housing expenses. Therefore, it has become harder to find affordable housing arrangements during the last 2 years.

Multiple choices for eating out (or getting take out), convenient grocery store, bank options, and gas station. Firestone is right there if you have car troubles and the Cleveland Heights fire station is blocks away. Can't beat the location, with how many great places are nearby. The new top of the hill project is being built, which will bring more options to the neighborhood. Highly recommend living here.

Cedar-Fairmount is positioned well between 2 to 3 different buses that run directly to Case's medical school campus (plus points in between). 15 min walk to the red line train station. Only a few bars and restaurants nearby, but they are pretty good (Barrio, Vero, the Fairmount, nice local pub, Starbucks, Aladdin's, Bruegger's). Best thing is being a 5 min walk from Dave's supermarket.

A few good bars (especially Barrio) and restaurants here, and its close to Coventry and Cedar-Lee, both of which have even more. It is nice to have a grocery store (Dave's) right there, although it isn't a great grocery store and I tend to shop elsewhere for produce and bigger shopping trips. The walk to school is great and very fast (about 15-20 minutes), and when it snows, part of the walk is through campus which is generally shoveled/salted well.

I like the neighborhood, close to Dave's (grocery store), and local hangouts (Luna-bakery, Starbucks, Barrio's-bar/tacos). Relatively convenient for getting to campus and there's a shuttle as well. Well-connected on bus lines. Feels safe. The main street (Cedar) gets cleared of snow pretty quickly. The actual street that the apartment is on and the city parking lot sometimes don't get cleared too well but it's not too bad because it's a very short distance. The sidewalk in front of our building gets cleared of snow pretty quickly.

Safe neighborhood, very close to campus, but just far enough that we pretty much never worry about crime up here on the "top of the hill," whereas there are often many crimes in little area/ east cleveland. Walking distance to both coventry road and cedar/fairmount area, with groceries, restaurants, and bars. Overnight street parking for guests is easy here- just call the police and give them your license plate number. And if you have daytime visitors, it is easy to find free street parking for them.

Technically we live in Cleveland Heights, but this area along with Coventry feels safe and friendly. Many med students live in the apartment buildings on Overlook, so you will have plenty of company. It's close to all the shops and restaurants at Coventry and on Cedar as well as within walking distance (10-20 min) to the med school. There's a steep hill between Overlook and the school (uphill from school to Overlook) that can be annoying if you're biking. The area is somewhat safe - nowhere near as bad as East Cleveland - but there are occasional robberies. The cemetery (5 min walking distance) is a great place to run. It's a generally good neighborhood.

Fairly close to campus, but not as congested as Little Italy or Cedar-Fairmont area. There's only really one actual bar (Panini's), but there's several wonderful restaurants, including class favorite Pacific East. There's a Marc's which is convenient for grocery staples, and also a few shops for clothes and knick-knacks. Phoenix coffee is also a nice study spot. In general, most of the neighborhood seems to be students and young professionals, and seems fairly safe to get around.

15 minutes from school and Coventry Road, which has bars, restaurants, hair salons, grocery stores, etc. This is nice in the summer but not as much in the winter, when that nice 15 minute walk turns into a 20+ minute slog through cold and darkness. It's not a huge deal though. Coming back from Case is slightly uphill, so if you hate hiking uphill, then that should be a consideration.
The neighborhood is really green. There are some spectacular houses around Cleveland Heights, and the fall foliage is beautiful. The neighborhood is usually quiet other than ambulances coming through Overlook Road on the way to University Hospitals. You will need a car to get groceries. The closest grocery stores are at least a five minute drive away. If you are a Case student or UH employee, this location is really popular and you will have coworkers and classmates everywhere in close proximity. There is a playground for small kids within a couple minutes of walking (intersection of Kenilworth and Overlook). The walk to Little Italy is surprisingly far. There is no real way to get there other than walking all the way down Edgehill Road, turning right up Murray Hill Road, and walking for another ten minutes (so 20 minute walk at least). I always feel safe walking around at night. It's really suburban and not much is going on. Commuting to work by car may be annoying because Edgehill Road gets packed during rush hour. It is one lane both ways and is the only way to get down the hill from Cleveland Heights to Case campus. Keep reading

The surrounding area appears to be really nice, especially during the summer when daylight is longer. I’m able to walk around and feel just fine. But in the same breath there’s also been gunshots fired in the parking lot next to my apartment. There are also two light rail stations near by which makes travel to the west side a breeze. Many graduate students live in this neighborhood which makes it really easy to socialize or study with friends. Cleveland Heights also has a really cute little community garden for local residents to do their own gardening.

I haven't done too much exploring due to COVID but the neighborhood seems pretty nice. There isn't much in the area immediately surrounding the apartment but the Heights in general has some good dining, bars, and coffee options. Additionally it's close to school but far enough away to create some psychological distance, and there are a few parks. Overall it's very residential.

I've never experienced anything negative in the neighborhood, especially around the area that Lewis Manor is located in. However, there are often CWRU alerts about crimes that are occurring around the area, so it's safe, but be careful! Just do what you would normally do if you were living in a city!

Lewis Manor
On the smaller side compared to other neighborhoods, but best place to live closest to campus if you’re looking to be near bars, restaurants, etc. Barrio and the Fairmount are the most popular restaurants and both have great happy hours, but be sure to check out Parnell’s (Irish pub), Luna’s (cute bakery/lunch spot), Zoss (Swiss bakery), Vero bistro (fantastic gourmet pizza), and Night town if you want to hear jazz

Castle
Excellent location near Starbucks, Dave's market, bars, restaurants, gas station etc. Still close to school (walking record is 12 min there, usually 15-18 coming back). Generally safe, but the parking lot behind the building is near a lot of commercial buildings and might not be the best place to hang out late at night, especially on weekends.

I am overall not the biggest fan of the east side of Cleveland. There are restaurants and bars within walking distance, but the area has more of a suburban feel than it does a city feel. As I was used to more of a city vibe having moved from Ohio State, it was definitely a shock to me. If you're looking for something with a more lively feel, Tremont or Ohio City might be areas you'd check into.
My least favorite thing about the area is that inexpensive grocery stores are at least 10-15 minutes away! Highway access is also difficult to get to. It can take 20 minute driving to go 4 miles which has been something I've definitely had to adjust to. That being said, the area has been quite safe, although it is near some of the more crime ridden areas of the city. I feel comfortable walking around by myself at night (within reason of course). I also do enjoy going to Coventry (a cute strip of restaurants, bars, and shops) nearby as well as Cedar-Fairmount - both of which are within walking distance. If you're looking for something of a mix between city and suburban feel, I'd recommend looking into living in Cleveland Heights, as well as Cedar-Fairmount or Beachwood! Keep reading
Mapleview Heights
Overlook Road consists almost entirely of apartment buildings and is home to many CWRU graduate students. The location is within walking distance of campus as well as several commercial centers: Cedar-Fairmount, Coventry, and Little Italy. Overlook is central to all of these locations, but the downside is that it is a 10-15 minute walk to any of these places. The neighborhood is relatively quiet and is an overall great location for graduate student housing.

Stratford Arms
An old residential neighborhood right on top of the hill above campus. An eight-or-nine minute walk to Cedar-Fairmount, where there's a Starbucks, a grocery store, and a few bars and restaurants. A 10 minute walk in the other direction will get you to Coventry. And down Mayfield you can get to Little Italy pretty easily as well.

Mapleview Heights
Benefits are it's close to campus and close to a lot of students. There is a grocery store nearby and some restaurants. The area is pretty safe and is really nice to run around if you are a runner or workout outside. Pretty quite at night and understanding of the graduate student population.
Drawbacks are living in Cleveland Heights. The parking rules are a little restrictive but in general there's a method to the law madness. Sometimes they don't plow the walk to school very well in the winter but it's only an issue periodically. Keep reading
Kenilworth Gardens
This area is small, but quite nice. The bars are open late and there are small business owner that keep lovely shops up and down the street. With a Starbucks down the street, there is always somewhere to go, and the holiday events are rather adorable. The area feels really safe, and is patrolled by the Cleveland Heights Police Department which is better than others in nearby areas.

Cedar-Fairmount is a great little village with a grocery store, Starbucks, restaurants/cafés, a dry cleaner, and several other nice small businesses. I love that I have basically everything I need within walking distance, though I do also have a car. The walk to school is very easy, 15+ minutes.

The area itself is very nice and safe. I can walk around the neighborhood and not feel in danger. However, it is only a 5 minute drive from some not-so-nice areas, but once you learn which areas are good and which aren't, I'd say overall this is a great neighborhood to live in!
