Silver Spring —
8.1/10 Rating
(based on 63 neighborhood reviews)
It's only a five minute walk to the red line metro stop in downtown Silver Spring (which is only three stops from campus). As someone who does not have a car, it is in an excellent location as everything is within walking distance (although the bigger grocery stores like Giant and WholeFoods are a bit of a farther walk- about a half mile). The apartment is right around the corner from one of Maryland's Federal District Courthouses and a wonderful brewery that offers a lot of fun and safe outdoor dining options due to COVID-19. There is also a farmer's market in downtown Silver Spring's center shopping area every Saturday morning. The noise levels aren't too bad as the apartment is on a side street rather than the main roads in the downtown area.

The Point at Silver Spring
Pros: Across the street from a park and quiet neighborhood for children to play. The neighborhood is good for a quiet run. 7-11 across the street for quick snack and coffee runs. 5 minutes away from downtown for restaurants, shopping and movies. 5 minutes away from metro station. Grocery stores and mall within 10 minutes.
Cons: Traffic. elevated noise due to multiple high rises amplifying outside noise. Keep reading

DT Silver Spring is very much a city. It's more diverse that DC neighborhoods tend to be, with people from everywhere, of all income and education levels and of all ages and life-stages. This makes for a pretty eclectic place. There are three grocery stores in walking distance (including a Wholefoods) and the Silver Spring metro and bus station (a hideous looking monstrosity) ensure you can get anywhere pretty easily. The train line can be pretty noisy when the freight trains come through, but you get used to it.

We are a ~5 minute walk to downtown Silver Spring, which is a great area. There are enough restaurants/bars/activities to keep you entertained on nights when you don't feel like going into DC, but the metro is also a 5 minute walk when you do want to be in the heart of the city. We particularly enjoy McGinty's Irish pub, and the fact that we can walk to two movie theaters, especially the AFI.

I have lived in Silver Spring just over two years and it has grown tremendously. A new library and expanding mall and a number of new restaurants. Fairly well connected to public transportation with a new facility for all of the busses.

I love it. You have more space for less than what you would pay for a DC apartment. In addition, it is still city like living because downtown silver spring has so much stuff to do and places to eat. You’re so close to DC too

Vibrant with tons of very good restaurants. The neighborhood is very safe and you don’t really hear of any crime happening around here. Rents in most buildings in silver spring will be much cheaper than DC rents. The people in silver spring mostly consist of young professionals. One downside is that there aren’t many options for a night out (bars/clubs), and you pretty much have to go to DC for that. The commute from downtown silver spring to school is very quick via metro (6 stations, including a train switch). If driving it just depends on what time of day. During times that aren’t rush hour the drive takes 15-20 mins, but during rush hour it can take closer to 45 mins.

I love downtown Silver Spring. It offers enough restaurants and activities (like the farmers market every Saturday) to remain interesting, but it gives me a neighborhood feel. The only complaint is that sometimes it is difficult to get downtown to DC on a weekend because of issues with the Red Line metro.

Safe place. I left a package outside my door for a week and it was still there. Granted it was only cleaning solution for the dishwasher but I was still impressed. I left the door unlocked (unintentionally) once for a few hours while I was there and no one tried to come in.

It's a suburban neighborhood. There is a shopping center not too far, but I wouldn't walk since that would require walking along New Hampshire Avenue which is pretty busy (although there are sidewalks). As I said before, there is a park that is an easy walk, though. The commute to school by public transit is long, an hour at the minimum.

Downtown is beautiful. I have easy access to the movies the gym, 3 grocery stores, a shopping center, a luxurious library and many restaurants. The neighborhood is very safe. I can easily take the metro, the 70 or the 79 to campus. Date nights are always fun and the train is on the same line to my job. I am also by NOAA which is a pretty cool place. Though there are some homeless people in the area, it doesn’t seem like poverty is as apparent as it is by campus. I’ve never heard of any crime in this area and even so, there are two secure spaces that I must open to enter my apartment building.

The Silver Spring area has definitely come a long way from just being a suburban haven. There are plenty of restaurants and social activities for people of all ages! It is a nice reprieve from the busy, noisy locations closer to the city. Yet it is just a short metro ride to any downtown area. There are several grocery stores within walking distance from any location including a Whole Foods and a Trader Joe's! With plenty to do and something for everyone Silver Spring is a great place to live!

Downtown Silver Spring is an up-and-coming neighborhood with new stores and restaurants opening often (though many are chains). Farmer's Market open year-round on Saturdays, and there are lots of places for kids in the downtown pedestrian area and surrounding parks. There is a sizable Ethiopian population and many good Ethiopian restaurants. The neighborhood is safe during the day but some parts can be a little seedy after dark.

I really like the Silver Spring area. It has a convenient metro stop downtown, along with tons of restaurants, bars, music venues, and shopping. Neighborhood is okay. It's pretty close to downtown Silver Spring. There are two movie theatres in walking distance, as well as a grocery store, a few pharmacies, a mall, a liquor store, and a mattress store, among other things. I walk around at night feeling safe. There is often a lot of foot traffic.

Solaire is located in downtown Silver Spring, just two blocks away from the Discovery Communications headquarters. Downtown Silver Spring is growing to replicate an extension of downtown DC. That being said, let's look at the pros and cons.
Pros: - Farmers Market in Silver Spring - Lots of dining and entertainment options - Diversity - Feels like an extension of Washington DC, since it is very close to the city border - Public transit is everywhere - Every necessity is within a 10 minute walk Cons: - Everything closes before 10 pm - Not a very happening downtown. For a young professional like me, I need more that's happening around the area. Virtually no nightlife - Since its a growing city, and it's development is relatively new, there's construction sort of segmented into particular areas Other than that, great area to live!
