Oak Lawn —
8.9/10 Rating
(based on 65 neighborhood reviews)
It’s a great mix of young professionals. There aren’t a whole lot of undergrads living over here, which is really nice. I love being so close to so many shops and restaurants, but not too close, like I feel you’d be in Uptown. Knox Heights is on the strip of McKinney perpendicular to Knox, so you get the location benefits without the noise.

Pros:
-Within walking distance of a few bars/restaurants -Relatively quiet during the day -Some areas are safe -Beautiful parks close by Cons: -Quite a bit of construction around the area -Lots of traffic during peak traffic times -Grocery store is ~10 min away, not as easy to get to as I'd like Keep reading
Gables Uptown Trail
The complex is in the medical district, an area that is getting a re-vamp right now. Kroger is close, and a CVS was just built. The Inwood DART station is in the back yard. Love-Field is also about 3 miles away. So super noisy when trains arrive and planes are over head. Good luck if you are talking outside when a plane happens to fly over.

Alta Maple Station
Tons of stuff nearby - shopping center across the street with food, movies, clothing from cheap/casual to black tie, groceries walking distance, great nightlife a mild walk or minimum far uber ride away, about a tenth of a mile from a running trail (1.5 miles on the trail gets you to downtown at the AAC where the Mavericks/Stars play and many other events are hosted). Is a bit far from the office. Depending on whether or not there is an accident, which there usually is, the drive is about 45 minutes to an hour each way.

Oak Lawn is an overall great area in terms of access to the tollway, numerous grocery stores, and entertainment districts. Walkable during the day, although at night it can be somewhat sketchy alone. Nice area close enough to walk to McKinney, Cedar Springs, etc. without living in the thick of it.

I love living in West Village. It's super close to SMU and there are so many shops/bars/restaurants to choose from right down the block. It's also only one block to Mutt's and about 3-4 short blocks to the Cole entrance of the Katy Trail.

Oak Lawn is a great, walkable area with a lot of bars and restaurants. Cedar Springs and Lemon can get extremely busy, especially on the weekends. The neighborhoods around these streets range from safe to a little sketchy. There is a mix of expensive condos with affluent residents to cheaper apartments with people who work at the bars/restaurants/stores in the immediate area. Like many areas of Dallas, this area does have a homelessness issue. If you are walking around some of the neighborhoods at night, it is probably best to do it with a group.

Perfect neighborhood. There are two bars on McKinney that a lot of SMU students love. Most of the bars are on Henderson across 75 and easily walkable too. It’s a very safe area where I feel comfortable walking my dog alone at night as a girl in my early 20s. So nice to live close to the Katy Trail and less than a mile from SMU.

The West Village area has everything a young professional needs. You're walking distance to many of the stores you have to go to the mall to have access to (Banana Republic, Brooks Brothers, The Gap, etc.) and you even have access to a local movie theater. When you throw in bars, restaurants, and a large Starbucks...you have a solid spot. I highly recommend the area.

Uptown is the place to be, especially if you're young and single. I know dozens of friends within walking distance of my apartment, and I really enjoy living there not only for the bars, but for the general culture of uptown. The only downside is the commute, but by working out after work, I seldom sit in traffic.

Living in Uptown is great for people who like to go out at night, try different places to eat, and be in a city environment. Even though Uptown is very walkable (I walk to and from the bars when I go out), there is also a free trolley that runs throughout the day and most of the night. It is a little more expensive then living in Plano, but there are a ton of young people and there is always something going on. It can get noisy, but if you choose your apartment location well, you will not have to deal with that when you are going to bed. There are many grocery stores throughout Uptown and for the most part it is pretty safe. However, Uptown is far from work - my commute in the morning is usually about 40 minutes and after work it takes me between 45 mintues to an hour to get home. While this can be annoying, the commute is well worth living in a great neighborhood.

The location of this complex is excellent, especially if you are without a car. There are probably 8+ restaurants that are within a 7 minute walk, mostly on Lemmon Ave, Oak Lawn Ave, and Cedar Springs Rd. Walgreens, Kroger, Genesis Thrift Shop, a public library, and UPS are also a 5-10 minute walk away, so many conveniences are nearby. A post office is about a 15 minute walk away. Hardly anywhere in Dallas is as walkable as this area.
This is a very active neighborhood with a bar scene on the weekends. There are homeless people who live around here, but they have never bothered me. While I wouldn't call it a dangerous neighborhood, there is probably a little more crime than some larger complexes such as the Village. Keep reading

The neighborhood is mostly composed of young adults. There are families mixed in here and there. The area is relatively safe for Dallas but occasionally there are issues such as broken-in cars (we receive several notices to empty cars before going in). There are lots of places to eat with several well known chains in the area as well as unique spots. There is a trolley that circles the area and downtown that is useful. Parking on the weekends can be hard to come by.
