Fitler Square

Old-School Philly Charm
Situated right along the Schuylkill River, Fitler Square is a quaint neighborhood full of old-school Philadelphia charm. It's part of a larger area more commonly referred to as 'Schuylkill' that's also comprised of Devil's Pocket and Grays Ferry. Renters rave about this area for the nearby parks and fantastic restaurants.

Fitler Square — 8.7/10 Rating (based on 278 neighborhood reviews)
The location is unbeatable with close proximity to more action in Rittenhouse, the Schuylkill for running, and a short commute to school/the hospital. Trader Joe's is ~10 minute walk from my house, but there are also a few other smaller grocery stores nearby. It's a very family friendly area with folks of all different ages and tons of dogs.

Fitler Square is really cute and homey. It's around a lot of other medical students, so it's a good social area and has an easy commute to school. It's also great if you like running because it's right off the trail on the river. Food is good but a bit homogenous (compared to West Philly especially.

Fitler is lovely! Right by the Schuylkill river, which is great for running, walking, or just enjoying some time outside. A short walk from Center City and the amazing restaurants of Rittenhouse while not being too far from Penn's campus. Plenty of transit to get where you need to go beyond that. A couple of great restaurants in the neighborhood itself but mostly benefited by its proximity to everything else. Also has great access to grocery stores.

The beautiful tree-filled neighborhood is full of families, dogs, and students - it is safe, full of great restaurants, and boasts an equally quick walk to both University City and downtown attractions. The immediate access to the Schuylkill River Trail also can't be beat. While we lack apartment amenities, we love living in a historical brownstone that has charm and character. This is an area where you can live as a student and stay for another 20 years after that.

2116 is about a 20-25 minute walk to Huntsman Hall and because so many other students live here there are a ton of Uber/Lyft pools every morning, which means you can usually split the fare 3-4 ways and pay $1-2 per person to Uber to campus if you don't want to walk. The bus is also an option but is generally a bit less reliable.

The Rittenhouse area is a very nice place to be and I have generally felt safe. There are a ton of nice restaurants, bars, etc within a 5-10 minute walk.

There is a CVS and Target a few blocks away and Trader Joes is 1 block north on Market Street.

The neighborhood is perfect for my needs. I am 1 block from the Schulykill park (and the running/biking trail) (and dog park, basketball courts, tennis courts). I'm also half a block from Fitler Square. I am about 7 minutes via bike from CHOP and on closer to my clinic site than the hospital. I'm north of South Street so closer to the action and very close to the gym. Also Delancey is a very good looking street.

Wharton bubble. I love it. Decent restaurants-- not as many fast+healthy+good-value meal options nearby as I'd like but many nice places. Nightlife is what Wharton makes it. Easy walk to some cool stuff in town.

Chestnut street has more of a homeless problem than I'd like but that will be hard to avoid in general, has not been a problem for me personally.

Fitler square is primarily behind Riverloft (which faces Walnut). You're really in Center City. The Fitler square neighborhood is amazing for walks with dog, running, hanging out in the park, small cuter-type restaurants, etc. Probably more attractive to couples, families, and lower-key students. A little bit of a walk (10 minutes) for bar scene, with exception to Pub and Bonners.

I think Fitler Square has it all. It has its own good bars and restaurants and is only a couple blocks to the full host of things at Rittenhouse. Easy walk to campus or convenient Route 40 bus. Multiple parks including the one at Taney and Lombard which is one of the biggest parks in the city and part of the Schuylkill River Trail. Decent grocery store right at 23rd and south, but still a reasonable walk to Trader Joes at 22nd and Market too.

N/A - it's a single family row house
Some pros to living in Fitler Square are that it's close to 2401 and the area is safe and quiet. You have easy access to the Schuylkill River, freeway, buses, trolley. Additionally, Trader Joes, Rite Aid, and ATM machines are within 3 blocks. There are plenty of neighborhood restaurants and coffee shops, and the area is family and pet friendly.

Some cons are that it's far from the bar and party scene. Most students live in the high rise buildings so you don't see too many Wharton students when walking around the neighborhood as the neighborhood only has brownstones. So coordinating Uber rides to campus or needing large common areas to study and do group work (other than 2401) is challenging if you have an apartment in this neighborhood.

Pros:
- Close to campus - closest out of all Center City apartments
- Right by the river (which is gorgeous)
- Super close to 30St Station and megabus / boltbus busstops
- Quiet residential area
- Yet, only a 5-10mins walk to Rittenthouse and popular bars and restaurants
- SWEAT gym is a minute walk away
- busstop for busses 21 and 42 is a minute walk away (right by SWEAT)
- Good karma cafe for your daily coffee fix is just 2 mins away :)

Con:
- No closeby grocery store. We manage fine with a weekly visit to the South St. Supermarket (15 min walk away). Riteaid is just 2 mins away for more urgent needs.

Two awesome parks very close, a couple great cafes (Lutecia, Honeys) and bars (Ten Stone, Pub & Kitchen, Tria Fitler) right here, and we're only about 4 blocks away from Rittenhouse proper. Walk is the same or shorter as a Rittenhouse location, and I generally walk across South Street bridge although it's only a hair longer to go via Walnut. If you're on a side street it's quieter than our home was in suburban Virginia. Decent grocer at 23rd and South.

Love the neighborhood! If you're interested in being close to the center of the city and being able to actively explore Philly (for a not extreme price) it was great! Also was easy to get to my school - University of Pennsylvania. 15-20 mins to get to school by transit; 30 mins walking.

That being said I did notice that most students lived on the side of the school!

Pretty good by Philadelphia standards. I like the close-knit feel of the area, and the small cafes and green spaces nearby. It is an easy walk to multiple grocery stores, and transit access is pretty good. However, there are still crime problems in the area, despite Fitler Square being safer than most of the city, like a Penn student who recently almost got kidnapped at random recently, and I occasionally hear gunshots at night.

Great neighborhood, though expensive for Philly. If you're a Penn grad student who wants to be near campus but not on campus, it's ideal for distance from school and the Rittenhouse area. Lots of parks and residents are friendly.
There are residents without housing in the neighborhood. They're good people and new residents should be respectful of them and their belongings.

Center City is a fantastic area. I live on the northern side of it, which is the more financial/industrial/apartment building side. I live 2 blocks from a busy Trader Joe's and inches away from tons of great restaurants, corner stores, and shops. It's close to Rittenhouse Square, a swanky square block with a tiny park in the middle, as well as the Schuylkill River trail (great for running and biking) and the Art Museum area. Multiple major bus lines slice through this neighborhood, making it quite easy to get anywhere when you don't want to walk or bike.

This spot is perfect -- closer to campus, near the train station, huge spaces, kind and helpful staff, cool-looking building, new gym, beautiful park nearby, and overall easy and awesome loft-style living experience. I think people will pressure to have to live on Rittenhouse because that's what everyone immediately says to do, but in reality you can live near Rittenhouse (Locust on the Park is just a 5 minute walk to the square) and not miss out on anything. Fitler Square is beautiful, quiet, and still a perfect location.

Pros: close to school as well as all the fun stuff downtown (Schuylkill River Trail, restaurants, bars, museums, theaters, shopping, you name it!); very safe even walking alone late at night; lots of other students here
Cons: Trader Joe's is the only real grocery store here and may have limited selection for those looking for a supermarket; not as quiet or "neighborhood-y" as other areas, as it is in the heart of downtown; there is a freight train that runs along the river that can be loud, though I got used to it quickly

Our house is located right on the northern edge of the Fitler Square area. We love the feel of the neighborhood-- there are several historical homes, lots of trees and narrow, bricked streets. It's very quiet and close to all amentities. In addition, it's one of the closest locations in Center City to campus. It takes my husband about 20 minutes to walk to Huntsman and if it's raining or snowing there is a bus that picks him up a block away and drops him right in front. 2401 is only 2 short blocks north! We are close to grocery stores, pharmacies, convenience stores, parks and coffee shops. While we are a bit removed from the popular bars (about a 10 minute walk or 3 minute Uber), it's still easy to meet up with friends for happy hours, etc.

Fitler square is great. It is a little bit removed from the rest of the Wharton crowd over closer to Rittenhouse, but we are never more than a 10 min walk from anything going on over there. We are 5 min from 2401 and a quicker walk to campus. Not quite as many food options immediately around us as Rittenhouse, but plenty to choose from, and like I said no more than a 10 min walk to anything around Rittenhouse.

Neighborhood is very safe with lots of families and kids and very quiet. We are one block from the Schuylkill river park and the trail/dog run there which is great for us as dog owners.
