North Campus
Close to Kerrytown and University Hospital
This part of campus has plenty of places to eat, drink, and socialize without ever needing to stray too far from university life. Some restaurants people enjoy include the Gandy Dancer for seafood lovers, the Northside Grill, which is a casual place serving American fare for breakfast and lunch, The Big Salad, where patrons get to build-their-own salads, and the Belly Deli if you are looking for a quick bite. If you are looking to enjoy a scenic stroll or run, there are a variety of options - Riverside Park, Bandemer Park, and Fuller Park. For those looking for hiking and biking trails, the nature preserve - Bluffs Nature Area - is the place to go.
North Campus provides the quiet, residential area that many renters are looking for while only being a short drive away from popular downtown nightlife options. Also, if you're a medical student, this neighborhood is in the heart of the 'White Coat Area'.

7.9/10 Rating

Neighborhood is good, mostly suburban. There are a few businesses nearby that are convenient, and they are supposed to be opening more. The main downside is there is not any large grocery stores nearby. I walk or drive most places so I don't know how good the bus system is for this location.
It is a short walk to Kerrytown and then a little further to downtown AA. It is a great walk to the hospital, so if you work there you won't have to pay for their parking. If you like nature there are a few close by nature designated areas of the Arboretum, Leslie Science Center, and the cascades at Argo Park are all walking distance. The area feels very safe. Neighborhood is great! It is super close to the hospital and people are generally pretty friendly. It is right next to the river so you can hang out with people here as well. I will say it does get a little strange at night sometimes with people walking around so I wouldn't cross the river at night.

Location location location. White coat area is walkable, convenient, and safe. Can't really get any closer to med campus than this. Be aware though that this neighborhood is in a bit of a desert, you're about a mile from central campus / food / grocery and the walk is uphill almost the entire way.

I LOVE that it's right by Argo park with a beautiful lake and great walking/hiking/running trails. The nature around here is amazing! It's nearly the railroad which could be a downside for someone w/ sleeping problems but I had no problem. It's not Nielsen, but for this price, you won't find a better deal!

Great quieter area very close to the hospital, and close to many other med students. It’s a more peaceful area that’s a tad farther from downtown, but for someone who likes a quieter space to study or nice spaces to walk and hang out with friends, white coat area is right by the river and Island Drive Park, and there are often med student social events held at White Coat Area because so many medical students choose to live here.

River House has a good location due to its proximity to several bus lines, but it's especially nice if you have a car. Island Park is right across the street, so this is a good complex for parents or cat owners/bird watchers (sadly dogs aren't allowed). It also makes for nice views if your unit is facing the river. One downside to being near forest is that we get the occasional spider, plus invasive stinkbugs in the spring and fall - but this might just be due to my unit's old windows. The area is also safe and quiet - there's a lot of couples, families, and grad students living here.

I personally really like North Campus, although it is farther away from downtown and the law school. There are several restaurants right near my apartment complex and the commute to school is very easy. I also find the lack of nightlife a plus, because it means the neighborhood is a lot quieter and safer than other areas of Ann Arbor.

Ann Arbor is a pretty safe town at baseline, but the White Coat Area is definitely among the quieter parts. Close to the hospital so ideal for Nursing/Medical/Public Health/PhD students. Walk-able to areas of nightlife: ~15-20 minute walk to South U/State Street and ~20-30 min walk to Main Street. Car strongly recommended as the closest grocery store is ~1.5 miles away. There is a bus stop nearby on Maiden Lane otherwise.

The white coat area is great for medical students. Proximity to the hospital and school is ideal, as well as being surrounded by many of your colleagues. Parking is typically included with most apartments in the white coat area (although usually just 1 or 2 cars), and a car is usually desirable to have since grocery stores are not really within reasonable walking distance. The farmer's market in Kerrytown is just a mile away which makes for a nice walk on Saturday mornings and anytime you feel like being closer to main campus, it really isn't hard to hop on a bus and get to the diag or stadium.

This neighborhood is great for its proximity to the med school/hospital; however, if you are looking for more of a downtown AA vibe with restaurants/coffeeshops/other activities in walking distance, this isn't it. There are a couple eateries nearby, but generally, you have to walk about 15-20 minutes to get to Kerrytown/downtown AA or drive places. Shoreview is quite outside of the white coat area which means most of the neighbors are doctoral students or non-students. As someone who gets stressed out by other medical students, this was exactly what I was looking for. The people are friendly and there are a lot of dogs in the area, so you can always strike up a conversation and meet a good animal on your way to the hospital in the morning or on the way back in the evening. Access to Ann Arbor's natural settings could probably be beat by only a few other apartment complexes in the city, and I think that adds a lot to the Northside charm.

Overall this area is great for walking to the medical school and hospital, living near other medical students, and especially having easier parking than in the central downtown/kerrytown areas. You also escape the rowdiness of undergrads by living here. The main reason I gave it a "7/very good" rating was because I don't like feeling isolated in location from central campus. Walking from White Coat to restaurants/bars downtown is at least 20-25 minutes, and often I decide not to go just because I don't want to walk there and back. After 6PM everyday parking is free downtown (free all day on Sunday), which is nice, except you don't always want to drive if you are going out to bars. It would be nice to have some type of casual coffee shop or restaurant in walkable distance to White Coat, but there is not. (edit: there is one breakfast-like cafe near White Coat, but it gets busy and is over-priced). There are some restaurants and coffee shops down the street on Plymouth road (not downtown) which is an easy 5 minute drive.

A great distance from the hospital/Taubman Library. Very close to trails along the river. Relatively quiet, although there has been quite a bit of construction as of late. Besides the hospital though, there are not many places you can go to in close walking distance. For example, central campus and Kerrytown are ~20 minutes walking, and although you could bus to grocery stores on Plymouth Rd, having a car makes things much easier.

North campus/White coat is great. I like being close to the medical campus and surrounded by other medical students and residents, etc. I do wish that I lived closer to Kerrytown/Downtown but this gets the job done.

All apartment complexes in the area, very nice new library nearby. Connected to good dog walking/jogging trails. Very safe but quite disconnected and sleepy relative to the rest of Ann Arbor

There isn't really a neighborhood here. The complex is pretty secluded from other residential areas. It is not walkable to anything. But it is peaceful, quiet, safe, and beautiful.

Not much of a walking scene around the actual apartment, but a short drive or bus ride into the town area. Also by Kerrytown, which is another cute and unique area to explore.

Tends to be owner occupied. No pets allowed by the Condo Association. Close to transit to get to central or north campus in less than 15 minutes.

Northwood is a boring place to live. Very safe, quiet if you're not too close to the highway, but far removed from bars, restaurants, etc.
