Close to campus and surrounded by a lot of undergraduate housing so area is relatively safe and friendly. There's always undergraduate students walking around the area all the way towards midnight so you're never fully alone. The area is surrounded by a lot of fraternities that generally don't party past midnight so they don't feel too disruptive.

Ida Louise Jackson Graduate House
South Berkeley is where most Berkeley students live. Most of the dorms for first year undergraduates on South Side so it can get busy. Because it's busy, it's generally more safer to walk around South Side. There are a lot of nearby restaurants and stores that you can go to and everything is within walking distance - no car generally needed on South Side. In terms of prices, the closer you are to campus, the more expensive it is. Having a roommate is a requirement for affordable rent.

Not as loud as up Durant ave (near the Gourmet Ghetto). Good for those who are a little more noise sensitive (but not too noise sensitive). Close to downtown Berkeley and the RSF.

The neighborhood is okay, definitely can hear/see some strange people a few times a week. Also, since it is closet to other undergrad dorms it can be a little loud at times. However, I don't feel like my safety is compromised since there is so much people around the streets so it feels safer.

Royston Apartments
This is mainly where undergraduates live. There's lots of cheap eats nearby and student bars. It is louder here and not as safe as Northside Berkeley, but still reasonably safe if you use common sense and are hyper-aware of your surroundings.

Really close to campus. Very convenient. Occasionally will encounter homeless individuals on street, so just be careful. But mails and packages have been really safe here.
