University

Home to University of Minnesota
Aptly named for its prime location next to the University of Minnesota campus, the University neighborhood is a haven for students, professionals, and university faculty. The neighborhood boasts numerous bike lanes and pedestrian-friendly infrastructure, making it a walkable and active community. The location is great, and the city’s robust transit system provides access to both the campus and downtown Minneapolis, while the Light Rail service connects University with the border Twin Cities region efficiently. The urban atmosphere and lively environment makes it an exciting location, and residents and visitors are always within reach of sports games at the TCF Bank Stadium as well as leisurely strolls along the Mississippi River, catering to all preferences.

University is home to a number of venues, bars, and theaters, and the area comes alive with nightlife at night. Catch a show at the historic Varsity Theater, or grab some of the delicious dining choices like Kbop Korean Bistro or enjoy the award-winning cuisine at Alma Cafe. Housing in the area is diverse to cater to the various residents who call University home. Those looking to move will find plenty of apartments, shared housing, and single family homes all offering a blend of historic and modern architecture, giving the neighborhood a little bit of extra charm. The neighborhood is not one to be skipped over when looking to reside in Minneapolis, the melting pot of an area is dynamic and youthful and creates a welcoming and exciting atmosphere.

Within the apartment grounds, neighbors are very nice and look out for each other. They notify each other of sketchy things going on via a Facebook page that you can join. If you have the time to get to know your neighbors, you can always plan on having a grill out with them. Most residents here have at least one person in the household that is in graduate school so it's very easy to create a connection.

I think Cedar-Riverside gets a bad reputation, but overall it has been an enjoyable neighborhood. There is a risk of crime here as there is anywhere else in the city, but I don't feel unsafe in my building or during my walk to class. Just be alert and aware of your surroundings. Generally I see people out walking around with their pets and down to Riverside Park when it is warm.

I barely live in Cedar-Riverside. There is something of a divide between the Cedar-Riverside neighborhood and the Seven Corners area, where 7 West is located. Overall, it is fairly quiet and well lit. Despite there being four bars at one intersection, it does not get rowdy. The property companies at the apartment buildings nearby do a good job of maintaining the area and it never feels run down or unsafe.

I really like Cedar-Riverside. It is diverse and unpretentious. It's not the most scenic because of the stupid choices made to put freeways all over the place in this city and cut off this neighborhood from surrounding ones. But there is good transit, and you can walk to the river or to downtown easily. One downside is the lack of grocery stores, but you can bike or transit to one within 20 minutes. After dark I use my big city street sense to be wise about where I walk.

There's a direct bus route a block away that goes directly to the University of Minnesota's East and West Banks. If you drive, there's easy access to the highway and traffic is minimal. Neighborhood is not great, but as good as can be expected for commute to UMN to still be walkable. Restaurants and bars on west side are fairly good. Maintaining awareness of surroundings is crucial as crime is relatively high throughout neighborhood, and it's a best practice to bike when possible, but bike lanes are great. Public transit is frequent, though I know some people avoid it for safety. Cell service is excellent, hospital also attracts food trucks which is another plus. Drivers will note that Riverside ave. has terrible traffic lights, and getting across the neighborhood is very slow, though proximity to 35W is a plus.

7West is actually located in the Seven Corners neighborhood, which is a little pocket just north of Cedar-Riverside. While it is not the most exciting neighborhood in the area, there are several bars/restaurants/coffee shops within a short walking distance (including some right across the street). Cedar-Riverside itself is only a short 10 minute walk away, and has a lot more eclectic and ethnic food and drink offerings. Honestly, as a busy law student (especially 1L year), this was sufficient for me. It's only a short Uber/light rail ride to get to more "fun" areas of town on weekends.

The Mississippi river is only about a 5 minute walk away, which I don't think enough people take advantage of enough. The park by the river is a nice place to relax and the riverside road is great for dog walks. Gold Medal Park is also only a short walk away. So you will be able to find green space if you look for it!
Like any downtown area, there is some crime and sometimes sketchy characters in the area late at night. Cedar-Riverside has more issues with this than the Seven Corners area does, I think. But as a single woman, I have never felt unsafe walking my dog at night.
