Streeterville —
8.5/10 Rating
(based on 230 neighborhood reviews)
Overall, I am glad that I lived in Streeterville because of the convenience to the hospital, which was super helpful, particularly on rotations. Streeterville feels very safe as well, and it is easy to get to the Magnificent Mile or to the loop via the Lake Shore Trail. You can definitely get more for cheaper in other parts of the city, but I am glad to have lived in Streeterville.

The neighborhood feels very safe, and we live one block from the medical school, which is very convenient. We live across the street from a park with tennis courts and a track. The bar and restaurant scene is not very good in Streeterville so we usually go to other neighborhoods for nights out.

Streeterville has everything you would need in a 2-block radius: several restaurants, fast-food venues, pharmacies, grocery stores (Target, Whole Foods, etc).
A problem could be the distance from the university, but the UChicago Shuttle is very reliable and safe. The bus comes every 15-20 minutes and it takes between 30-45 minutes to get to the university. Keep reading

It's an okay area. There are some bars and restaurants around, but there are a lot more (and better) places in the surrounding neighborhoods like River North, Old Town, West Loop, and the Loop. However, some of these neighborhoods are within walking distance so it's not like you're missing out. You're also right by the lake and the school (which is great for commuting when it's freezing cold). The only downside is that you'll hear sirens pretty often but that becomes easier to ignore. So in summary, the neighborhood might be relatively lacking when it comes to food or activities but it's in a very ideal location.

Being close to school is helpful and I love being a few minutes' walk away from the lake. However Streeterville doesn't have the same variety of coffee shops, restaurants, etc. that other neighborhoods in Chicago have. Also being only a couple of blocks off of Michigan Ave. means that there are a lot of tourists in the area.

Perfect location for Feinberg, almost feels like a small slice of a college town because so many of your neighbors will be students, residents, nurses, etc at the hospital. You do get sirens fairly often depending on where you live since the emergency room is very close. The neighborhood doesn't have too many restaurants/bars but it is walking distance to River North and Gold Coast and the rest of the city is easily accessed by public transport. Much safer than most neighborhoods in Chicago.

Streeterville is a very nice neighborhood. There are plenty of parks and grocery stores. There is some late night crime due to the location downtown and close to the beach, but overall nothing worse than anywhere else.

The Streeterville area was still pretty sleepy when I moved here three years ago. Since then, there has been an incredible amount of development. Streeterville is fine. The main advantage is how close it is to school. Especially for early mornings this is incredibly helpful. Most first year students also live close by which makes it easy to hang out. I almost always end up exploring other neighborhoods for bars, clubs, food, drinks, and most activities that I do outside of school. For my first year and living in Chicago for the first time, I'm glad I chose here. For the next few years, I would like to live closer to the neighborhoods I spend more of my leisure time in.

Streeterville is very safe, fairly quiet, and close to lots of restaurants, bars, and shopping. The biggest cons are the lack of grocery stores, the very touristy feel, and the massive crowds on the sidewalks.

Very convenient for school and for social/friend aspects. Amazing living so close to the lakefront trail, beaches, and Michigan Ave. This neighborhood has more chain restaurants, etc. than many other parts of the city, so less personality. It is an expensive neighborhood to live in. Most people do not own a car and don’t need one based on this location. Usually feel relatively safe for a city apartment, but you do hear about carjackings, muggings, etc.
