Near Southside
A Great Lifestyle By The Lake
Home to the historic Mercy Hospital, Near Southside boasts impressive healthcare facilities which has helped to transform this quaint neighborhood from an industrial powerhouse in the 1940's to the modern mini-medical district it is today. Though many medical professionals live here, the area is home to people from all walks of life who enjoy the affordable and spacious housing options available to them.
Construction has increased exponentially in recent years, and Near Southside is now host to a fantastic assortment of modern apartment buildings, delicious dining choices, and public recreational spots. Residents can enjoy a classic deep-dish pizza or enjoy a wide variety of other cuisines such as Korean and Mongolian, but staying active is a major part of the neighborhood's culture, and it is reflected by frequent visits to Dunbar Park where residents can play tennis, enjoy the running track, or play pickup soccer on the vast amount of green space. No matter the season, Near Southside is an energetic neighborhood that has something to offer.

There's short walking distance access to the green line station, Jewel Osco, and a bunch of small restaurants/shops on Cermak road. It's next to Chinatown which means there will be plenty of small grocery stores and restaurants that offer more affordable prices than Jewel Osco.
There are always tourists and visitors walking around the area because of the proximity to the McCormick center. That makes the area feel very safe as there are usually always people walking around on Cermak rd. The area around the apartments looks a little sketchy at first, but I have been living here for 8 months and have had zero problems, I also never feel afraid to walk home at night from the station despite being a small woman. Arrive South Loop
Great for students with a partner who works in the Loop/Northside or who want to feel more a part of the city. Good access to groceries and the lake walk. Largely safe with the only less-than-safe (but still ok) area being the half block right near the Roosevelt Station. Lots of solid food options and great coffee shops. Not a ton of nightlife in the immediate neighborhood, but much closer to the going-out areas than Hyde Park.

Great neighborhood just outside the craziness of the Loop. You're still very much "in the city" and it's easy to get to any corner of the city. A decent selection of bars and restaurants nearby, and very convenient to grocery store, Target, Roosevelt Collection, etc. Neighborhood is very pet and child friendly. Always feel safe, even late at night.

Close to everything, but not so close it's congested or a headache to get from place to place. Trader Joe's, Jewel, nearby. Plenty of bars and restaurants walking distance. Walking distance to the el, Soldier Field, the Shedd. Also, easy access to the expressway if you're driving.Street parking is typically plentiful, except during events at Solider Field (parking ban during games).
If went further south than 22ND street it tends to get a little sketchy, but overall a nice area. Keep reading

South Loop is a great option because it's easy to get to both Hyde Park and downtown. There isn't much by way of restaurants/bars (at least in comparison to some of the other neighborhoods), but it's also a lot cheaper than downtown or the other neighborhoods west and north of downtown.

As a single woman it was very important for me to live in an area that was safe given that the medical school schedule will require me to come home at night. Also it gives me great peace of mind to live in a building with doormen 24/7 in case anything were to happen. However, this has come at at a great cost.

The neighborhood is a bit scary during the late hours, with many homeless and strange people begging outside the subway or Jewel Osco. The area is convenient as it is close to the freeway and subway line, not too far from the city.

Neighborhood is in a really great location - close to some many shopping options and great proximity to the loop. I love South Loop. It's close enough to Hyde Park that you don't feel like you have a terrible commute to get to the law school, and it's in the city enough that you feel like you're in Chicago. the streets are nice and wide, it's busy but not too busy, there are grocery stores and a couple of decent food options - it's a perfect compromise position for a law student that still wants to be in Chicago proper.

Overall this place is fantastic, but there can be some noise outside when I'm trying to sleep in. The sound of sirens and horns hoking is pretty obvious, but that's what you get for living in the downtown spot of a big city. If you dont' mind that, this is a great place to be!
