Erwin - LaSalle

Quiet and Convenient for Duke Students
This area includes Erwin Road, LaSalle Street and Morreene Rd, which run just north of Duke's campus. The area has some popular amenity apartment buildings like The Belmont, Lofts at Lakeview, and The Heights, which offer quieter alternatives to the more-social apartments like Station Nine.If you like to go out, prepare for plenty of rides to Ninth Street and Downtown as they host the main strip of bars.

Renters here enjoy the area for its convenience to Duke and generally quiet scene. It's very nice living with a few nearby restaurants/amenities, but you'll have to venture elsewhere if you want to find the traditionally popular spots.

Erwin - LaSalle — 7.9/10 Rating (based on 354 neighborhood reviews)
It's been perfectly fine. People are nice but it's not much of a community, just a place where people live. Behind the Belmont which had a spate of robberies a few months back, but the Flats is further away from the main road and is better lit. So far no security incidents or concerns at the Flats. Affordability depends on which apartment complex you choose in the Erwin-LaSalle area. Wide range in rents, ranging from very expensive to very affordable depending on which one you pick.

The neighborhood was perfectly fine when I started living there, but recently there have been some armed robberies in apartment buildings that are about a 10 minute walk away. However, I would like to say that I have not felt unsafe walking home at night and the security at Trinity is quite high. For example, you have to use a special key to get into the lobby (where a security guard sits after dark) and then you have to use the key to get in from the lobby to where the rooms are, and then again to get into your room. There are about 10 good restaurants within walking distance ranging from greek food to Mexican food to sushi so it's great for a quick dinner when you don't want to cook. There is also a hair salon and a manicure place, as well as a Walgreens pharmacy. We are very close to Duke Hospital and the bus systems are very accessible.

Next door to plaza with Chipotle, TGIF, UPS, and several other restaurants. Very short walk to another plaza with more restaurants and a wine/cider bar. 20-minute walk to class or to the hospital or to just about any other University amenity. Quiet! Bus stop very close by (though I've never used it). Occasional homeless beggars in plaza next door. Not a big Fuqua social scene here, though (but you can always change that!). A professor told my mother that this is the only neighborhood he would want his daughter to live in had she gone to Duke (for safety reasons primarily).

At the same time, it is a bit too far to walk to 9th St, where most of the social events are. This is a quiet neighborhood set between Duke campus and the main highway. It is possible to walk to restaurants and the grocery store, though it is a bit of a walk. There is not much street noise and the community is gated. The bus that goes to campus picks up directly in front of Belmont for students who do not have vehicles. The grocery store is about a 10 - 15 minute walk away. My drive to campus is about 5 - 7 minutes (not including parking).

Nothing out of the ordinary has happened so far. It's a great spot next to a restaurant mall and right at the front of the road so little ways for security issues to happen. It's a very visible building and parking is located inside the building so hard for any safety issues to occur. The neighborhood is quiet and the walls aren't so thin that i can hear everything happening so it's a nice calming environment. Also close to lots of bus stops for main routes which helps.

The neighbourhood is mostly residential, with a lot of fellow students living in the several apartment buildings. Walking distance to Duke campus and free buses during the week. Harris Teeter almost walking distance (or two Duke bus stops) away. There is no nightlife in the area, but 9th Street is only a couple of bus stops or short cab ride away.

It is a very hilly area, so walking or cycling to Duke will sometimes feel like a workout. The part of LaSalle St. leading to campus is really bad though, so you'd probably not want to bike there. Also Campus Walk Avenue has giant potholes on one side.

About safety: I have never had any bad experiences, nor have I heard of anything happening while I lived there, but it does get really really dark and quiet, so you would probably not want to walk around by yourself during the night.

Super close to campus. Can walk to Sanford school in 20-25 minutes. Bus takes about the same time to arrive, and there is a bus stop directly in front of the apartment complex (takes about 5 minutes to walk from apt front door to bus stop). Biking takes 7-10 minutes from apt to Sanford school. I have a car but do not drive to class.

As mentioned in the previous review, there seems to be quite a bit of crime in this area. I think it has something to do with it being so accessible to greater Durham. Unfortunately there seems to be great inequality in Durham and perhaps people in need view Duke students as wealthy, so crime becomes a problem. Again though-- this is just my experience in this area only--could be unique.

The dining options within walking distance are ok in this area (some good options, but you could get tired of them after a while). However, you can't beat how close it is to the hospital. There are a decent number of students that live in this neighborhood (at least half) so there's a good community of medical students within walking distance as well. You probably need a car for groceries/to get downtown (part of living in Durham), although some people manage with a bike. I have never felt unsafe walking around at night (most of the walk is within view of the hospital) but I'm from a city. On a super late night you may like a buddy.

The broader neighborhood's chief attribute is convenience to Duke. A lot of students live in the apartment complexes around here. Unfortunately, during fall 2021 and spring 2022 there were some robberies by the same person, but the police caught him very quickly. The neighborhood is within walking distance to campus and is very convenient. However, it does not always feel like a "neighborhood". Many of the people in my building are students/residents/people staying here while their houses get remodeled, so there is a transient feeling to the area. Some people worry about the safety here because there are some people with homelessness who occasionally hang around on the corner and ask for money, but I am coming from a big city and this does not bother me.

Campus Walk has Belmont and Lofts close by which have a park and pool, so it's a pretty walk down the lane. The Millenium hotel is also close-by so that's a plus. There is also a set of eateries and a spa down the lane.

But the thing that makes Campus Walk ideal for me is proximity to the bus stop and the campus. There is not many non-students here, so when all the students know and interact with each other, it feels nice.

I haven't heard of too many mugging or break-in incidents yet, so it's a relatively safe neighbourhood.

The complex that the Belmont is in is very nice. There are speed bumps for safety, plenty of parking, and the fact that it is gated makes me feel extra secure. The only thing that I don't like about the surrounding area is that people cross the busy street all of the time, and at all hours of the day in order to get to the bus. During the day isn't as big of a problem, but there are no crosswalks and at night it is very hard to see people in the street since it is curvy and poorly lit.

Surrounding area is not great. I have heard gunshots around and walking at night is not a great idea. That being said the complex itself doesn’t ever feel dangerous just surrounding areas are a bit more sketchy

The neighbourhood is good, most of the MMS students live in the nearby vicinity and most of the times you will catch up with many of them in the bus to school. Though there aren't any grocery stores close by.

Don't really care about the neighborhood except that it is walking distance to campus and has some quick eat places to stop by on the way back from school if needed. Almost exclusively students here.

I enjoy walking to class with many other students in the area however theres not much to walk to. Maybe the Nosh shopping center but most other things (bars/food/grocery) I need to drive.

Neighborhood is not bad. Anyways you need to be careful if you walk at nights. Sometimes in the public street there is no much light and cars are fast.
