Good affordable option
Near by the train and several bus stops, right off 53rd street for easy shopping, and a fairly calm neighborhood. Laundry unit in building, parcel lockers, and an elevator.

Budget Place with Maintenance Issues
The apartment is a great value for a studio if you are on a budget, but there are constant building maintenance issues. The washing machines are often broken, the elevator is down (which is okay since it is only 5 flights of stairs). For in-apartment work, they are quick to respond and fix, but the general building amenities are a mess. The apartment is small, but the kitchen is new appliances and location is close to the bus pickup. Worth it for a cheap studio but you get what you pay for.

You get what you pay for
It's difficult to find a one-bedroom for under $1000/month (including utilities) so in that sense, it's a great value. It's also near the 53rd Street restaurants and shops, which is definitely a plus. The 171 bus picks up just a block away. They also recently re-did the kitchens, and the unit was very clean when I moved in. However, appliances are still outdated and the units are small. Air conditioning is not included, but you can rent a wall unit from the building. Heating is radiator heating - very little temperature control. The building often smells of cigarette smoke and there are tons of pets living in the building, including birds. So you have to be able to put up with a few things, but overall it's met my expectations.

The Victorian/TLC
Much smaller than the floor plans they have online, but otherwise a really great apartment - cozy, nice interior, good heating, etc.

Hyde Park Reviews
I personally loved living close to campus, for access both to Harper Center and to the broader UChicago campus. I feel much more integrated with the rest of the university as a result of proximity and availability.
In short, there's enough going on in Hyde Park not to feel isolated, but it's far enough away from the city not to feel suffocated.
