Questionable

I have lived in this apartment for about a month and I am NOT loving it here. Some of the staff, especially the two people working both morning and afternoon shift at the front desk today 9/3 were VERY rude and made me feel unwelcome and not important. When we moved in, our tub was collecting water underneath. They fixed it a week after I submitted a service request, but I wish it had been taken care of before we moved in. This morning, I was having an issue with my fridge and notified the guy at the front desk so he could have maintenance check it out, and I was hoping they would before my food went bad. I left for work and came back later, and I could not tell if the fridge was working properly, so I went back to the desk to ask the guy if he knows if maintenance has been by my apt to look at it. A simple "I don't know" would have sufficed, but he proceeds to give me some attitude about other peoples air conditioners have been breaking, and therefore implying that a broken fridge with spoiling food is not important. I came back later because I was expecting a package, and there was someone else at the desk by this time. She tells me the packages need to be logged, even though I was able to see mine in plain sight, and logging simply means writing down my name in the book for me to sign for the package. I don't see why I should have to wait for every single package to be logged before I can pick mine up, especially when I can see mine in plain sight. Also, turns out she had already logged my package! She offered no apology for her rudeness and slammed my box up on the counter, slams the log book for me to sign and says absolutely nothing. Absolutely none of this attitude is necessary. The rent is cheaper than most apartments in the area and it is fairly close to the metro, which is why I chose to live here, but I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone who expects decent customer service!

Meh

Roach and mice problem. The amenities are just meh. The location and price are the only reasons I live here. The management doesn't care much about the pest problems. They don't even have rooftop access or a pool. There is constant noise from construction.

Getting around Forest Hills

Forest Hills Reviews

The Forest Hills/Van Ness neighborhood is great. It is a very short walk to Tenleytown (15 mins) and a 10 min walk to the Van Ness Metro, Giant Food, CVS, and a plethora of good coffee shops and restaurants. The M4 bus stops 3 blocks up the road and takes you straight to AU and the L2 runs very consistently on Connecticut Ave. The Chesapeake backs up to Forrest Hills Park and Rock Creek is right down the street with lots of trails. Overall, the whole neighborhood is very safe and student-friendly.
The neighborhood is very nice. Many things are in walking distance like a few restaurants, a movie theater, and the Cleveland Park Metro stop. It is a bit of a food desert in that the grocery stores and restaurants that are accessible are a tad on the expensive side. The neighborhood is pretty quiet and people are usually pretty friendly. Overall, a decent neighborhood for people at different stages in their lives.
Van Ness is on several bus routes and very near to the (Van Ness) metro stop. Moving off of Connecticut Ave. quickly becomes entirely residential, but there are restaurants and other amenities (such as grocery stores, dry cleaners, etc) along Connecticut. It's not a crazy or busy neighborhood like several others, which personally, I appreciate, but it does mean you'll have to go a bit farther than home if you're looking to go out for the night.
Van Ness/Forest Hills is quiet and a little boring. Not a lot of places to go out to eat or grab a drink in the immediate area. However, Cleveland Park and Tenleytown are fairly close. I love walking our dog up around International Drive and the embassies there. We frequently see deer coming up from Rock Creek Park, and the UDC/Howard Law students are mostly very courteous (many of them live in the neighborhood too, so they care about it also). The neighborhood feels very safe--lots of police presence, Secret Service sub-station in the neighborhood, and the local vagabonds are not aggressive to pedestrians--they mostly mind their own business.
I like the area on Connecticut avenue, just wish there were better food options. Great community, overall safe, love the HBCU next door (UDC). UDC is a great HBCU and community to be near.
Nice, quiet, and safe with some restaurants in the area. Seems very family friendly and slower paced than downtown. Easy access to grocery stores.
Close to the Zoo and great restaurants. Close enough to Downtown, but far enough away where you're not in the chaos but still in DC.
Pros: safe area (I can let my dog out after midnight and feel safe), <10 min walk to metro, bus stop right outside, grocery store/CVS <10 min walk away (although the giant isn't the greatest), lots of on-street parking available (great for guests),
Cons: not a lot of activities within walking distance
