Good location, but there are many nicer options

- great location (10 mins from Jake, 5 mins from all bars/restaurants/shops)
- basic and mediocre look&feel of apartment, old equipment
- spacious lobby

By far the msot convenient option

McManus is the place if you want to avoid spending time and money with contracts, maintenance, furniture purchasing ans assembling, etc. Despite its old architecture, the maintenance works fine and it is the closest facility to the campus and it has several study rooms.

Nice location

Mcmanus is very well located although the building is a little bit old and a bit expensive for what it offers. The good part is that a lot of people live here so there is always something to do, and is also close to university.

Very functional

McManus is a great option for student housing - especially for international students.

Yes, it needs refurbishment and yes, we'd love to have better carpets and real curtains (vs. shutters!). But, you don't have to worry about any contracts and any additional expenses. The management is prompt and available. The location is brilliant.. and McManus is often the location of choice for group meetings on weekends.

In short, it works. And, that's what you need as a student..

Great Deal

Great deal, location and social community since it's all Kellogg students that live here. Even better deal if you don't want to move or don't have any furniture. 9 month lease can't be beat for the summer

Love McManus

People will tell you about food smells in halls. It's true, but for the price, location, and convenience (free printing, group meeting rooms, etc), it's worth a few seconds of bad smell. Importantly, smell doesn't get into rooms unless you're the one cooking.

A Great Place to Be

1) Its location is excellent. You are probably closer to class than at least 80% of the other students. You are also downtown. Going to JT’s, an Evanston bar favorite, takes a two minute walk. Same for at least 10 food places. Burger King is across the street (1 minute walk) and open 24 hours a day. That might be considered a bad thing, but remember the location when you are walking through the ice cold snow in the winters – I already appreciate being in McManus. Whole Foods is across the street as well, 20 minutes closer than any other supermarket. Unless you have a car or a bike that can transport a lot of stuff, you may suck up the higher prices in order for time convenience.

2) The residents here are primarily international students and is made up exclusively of Northwestern Kellogg MBA students.

3) Pricing is simple, reasonable, and inclusive. Electricity (including heating and AC) and utility bills are included along with basic furniture. Everything large that you might need, including your own table, desk, and cabinets are included. I pay less than $1,000 a month and share a twin studio (no living room) that comes with bathroom and kitchen. This is not an undergrad dorm. Plus, no deposits.

4) Sound isolation is great – if you have ever lived in building with thin walls, you will understand. In general, I rarely hear anything from neighbors and thus far, have never felt bothered by noise, other than from one weekend party that was over by 10PM.

5) For your summer internship after your first year (if you are not staying in the Chicago area), or if you take an exchange trip abroad during your second year, you can put your stuff in storage and not pay rent while you’re gone. Great for avoiding the hassles of subletting. There’s a lot of flexibility in housing options. For example, I was able to transfer to a single apartment starting January.

6) All entrances require keys to get in, with the normal entrance requiring 3 key swipes to get to your room. You can feel reasonably safe.

7) Janet Olsen (Housing Coordinator) and Marisa Ann De Rose (Program Assistant, Residential Services) are great. I’ve asked them a lot of questions and they have consistently been responsive and helpful.

8) if you own a bike, you may want to keep it in your apartment. Bike racks are available, but they are in the very front of the buildings, and I have heard multiple stories of theft. Underground car parking is available (with parking pass).

9) There’s a social area on the ground floor with a large screen tv, couches, ping pong and foosball tables. There are also study rooms on each floor as well as a printing/copy room on the ground floor – I promise you will love this when you realize what a pain it is to print at school.

10) While there is a small gym, you will want to avoid it. The laundry room, however, is great, affordable, and electronic savvy. It costs $1 per load to use the drier or washer, you can pay by credit card It’s free, and you can check machine status online.

Convenience

I picked McManus for the convenience... fully furnished, close location to campus, and a frequent meeting place for groups and even social activities. It's a no frills place... but it gets the job done.

Downtown Evanston Reviews

Lots of apartments and family homes in the area. I always see someone riding their bike or walking throughout the day. It's a block from the police station, and only 2-3 blocks to downtown. Close to intercampus shuttle, 201 bus stop (3 blocks), and Dempster purple line (1.5 blocks). Nice area to live, quiet at night.
Downtown Evanston is a great place to live if you're a NU student. It's super easy to get to campus via either walking or the bus, and has convenient groceries within walking distance. The food scene is not the best, but good enough.
Evanston is the epitome of a college town, everything you need and most of what you want is within a 10 minute walk.
I really enjoy living in downtown Evanston. Everything that I need is within walking distance, and it is a 10-15 minute walk to my classes.
Safe, walkable area, even late at night depending on the streets you take. Great for convenience in terms of getting to campus, no car needed, access to many public transit options. You lose out in terms of cheap food options and fun nightlife - there are only a couple of bars open after 9PM on the weekends and for cheap food you're stuck with Chipotle or at best Tomate. But the lake and beach are within walking distance and you live close to other NU students making it well worth it for me.
Evanston really is a nice town. There's loads of food, both chains and otherwise, and a number of shops and things if you don't mind moving around a little. Driving in the greater Evanston area is not a lot of fun, I will say. I get the sense that the city doesn't much like the University and its constituents, and that the students don't always respect the city. It's not a perfect relationship, but it works. I can easily walk or take transit to class on the Evanston campus, and when I have class in Chicago I take transit, which usually takes more than an hour in the morning and close to an hour coming home.
Downtown Evanston is super cute! There are tons of restaurants and a handful of bars so I find that it offers a good bit of variety for the neighborhood size. There are street festivals, a great farmers market, summer concerts in the square and other community events I've enjoyed. Would highly recommend Evanston anyone who wants access to the city but a self-sufficient "urban burb" type neighborhood.
Pros: Great location near key Kellogg hangouts like World of Beer, Nevins, Five and Dime, Prairie Moon, etc. Also convenient to Bennison's Bakery! Great for late nights- can get home in < 5 minutes without ubering. Also near both Metra and L- ideal if you plan to spend some of your time in downtown Chicago.

Cons: Long walk from the Global hub. Closest grocery store is Whole Foods, a bit of a hike to TJ's and Jewel.
