Arrive

Arrive is a great place to live. It is a 5 minute walk from the school.

Great location!

The best perk of this apartment is the location. It takes me about 6 minutes to get to school (normal pace). During 1L, we had several 9am classes so living nearby the school helped with my sleeping schedule. One downside of the apartment is that the concierge wasn't as friendly as they were during the tour. Some interactions with the concierge is not friendly. It's hard to pick up packages in the late afternoon/after classes because the concierge is absent without notice. The apartment unit itself is very nice though. Great space and good views!

Horrible

-hazardous: elevator malfunctions often, I was stuck in an elevator for over 30 minutes, and there was no signal and the emergency button was not working. Management has a gate in between the 5th and the 6th floor that only maintenance can open so staircase acessibility is extremely low. In cases of fire alarms, the elevators do not function and residents cannot get to the first floor because of the gate.
-frequent system malfunctions: fire alarm goes off very frequently, I had several fire alarms go off during interviews and I could not relocate because of the issues discussed above.
-unfriendly management: After I was stuck in an elevator, I told management what had happened and they told me "we do our routine check-ups, what do you want". More care should be placed into the safety of the residents. Additionally, management is very slow at responding (on average takes them a week to respond to emails).
-dishonest practices: bad/slow at returning security deposits. Despite indicating a deadline of 2 mths on the contract, they took over 4 mths to return it. It took numerous phone calls and emails. Told me the security deposit was 1950 when I paid 2450. Had to find proof to present it to them. Told me the aparment is quiet and there were no constructions in the vincinity - there was an ongoing building construction for the full year I lived there (even at 2AM). Never responds to noise complaints. Had severe dog barking issues from neighbor but management never took action. Utilities are much higher (2~4 times) than similar residences (i.e. Paid $150~200 but the chestnut pays around $50 for a similarly sized unit). Make sure to have everything in writing if you do decide to live here.

Convenient, but not worth the money

The only good things about Arrive are probably its distance to Penn Law and quietness. However, there are lots of shortcomings including waiting super long time for the elevator (for an entire week, there was only 1 elevator functioning, I had to use stairs multiple times and I lived 20+ floor), incorrect electricity bills. Also, even though they provide free printing, the printer has been broken for 2 months, not to mention during the time when the printer did function, the paper always ran out and they won't replenish.

Great Place to Live Overall.

Love the space; plenty of room, tons of storage, walls are thick and neighbors are quiet. Management is overloaded thus somewhat unresponsive to issues; the coffee machine on the 6th is often out of order for weeks at a time, and I have not gotten a mailbox key despite living there for 3 months. But, so long as there are not issues, it's a perfect place to live. Also a 5 minute walk from the law school and I feel very safe!!

Arrive Univ City Review

Love my apartment. Very spacious and good separation with quarter wall for a studio. Only complaint is the fire alarm for the building has been going off a lot which is annoying. Also wish my apt had windows that open - check for ones that do, but ventilation is good so not really a problem. No pest issues thus far, and maintenance is usually timely. Safe neighborhood. Had a $3k discount because they were running a special when I looked in May. Look early if you can!

Close to hospital

I chose this apartment for its amenities (pool, gym) and for its proximity to the hospital (~12-15 min walk). The pool is advertised as heated but was not heated in the past 2 years despite bringing it up to management. Additionally, the lanternfly situation at our building was out of control this past year without any change in handling by administration. Our building seemed like ground zero for lanternflies. Overall, it's a good place to live but overpriced and management needs to be more responsive to resident needs.

Lovely apartments, pricey

We really enjoy it here. I (obviously) took out a larger loan to cover expenses, but there is a beautiful rooftop pool and patio with a fire pit and grills as well as a gym and study rooms. It's expensive, but for us it's been worth it. There is key card entry so its secure and the front desk people receive packages so they don't get left out.

No complaints

Great place to live, lots of amenities, convenient mail service, great front desk people. I love the huge windows, cleanliness, and quiet. I have no complaints about living here, but it hasn't been the most cost-efficient in covid, because I haven't been able to take advantage of public spaces like the gym, pool, and meeting areas (which are open, but I don't feel comfortable using them). There's not much to do around here in terms of food/bars/parks, but it's close to Penn Law and groceries are a reasonable distance (close to Giant Heirloom and walkable to Acme).

Arrive

Management is very responsive and the building is well secured. Gym and amenities are great and well kept. Typically quiet but noise does leak a bit, probably standard for apartment living in a large city. There were several issues with plumbing/leaks and while they were frustrating, maintenance is very responsive and good at their job.

Close enough to campus to walk, but far enough away that you don't feel surrounded by just students. Clark Park is lovely, there's something for everybody - farmers market on Saturdays, regular flea markets, off-leash area for dogs, playground, etc. Several coffee shops within 2 blocks and some good places to eat within 5 blocks. Grocery shopping isn't super convenient if you buy a lot at once, but doable if you're just carrying one or two bags. Street parking isn't too bad but gets competitive on the weekends.
I chose the neighborhood for proximity to the school. If I could choose otherwise, I would be over by Rittenhouse or further West around the Clark Park area. It feels a bit commercial in U City (not so charming or friendly). BUT everything you need is here and it is very convenient. The only real downside is an aesthetic one.
Gentrifying area of West Philly, given Penn's presence and expansion into the neighborhood. Easily walkable. Within several blocks of Clark Park, where there are lots of community events and family-friendly activities in addition to walking paths and dog park. Lots of cute shops and restaurants along Baltimore Ave plus great hole-in-the-wall spots if you want to explore a bit more.
I enjoy living in University City. It is perfect if you want to live in a low key area very close to school. Most people in the area are affiliated with Penn, so the community is generally pretty young and active. You are in walking distance from everything you might need. You do not need a car to get around. Even if you plan on spending a good deal of time in Center City, you can get there easily by rail or by Uber. I wouldn't have chosen to live anywhere else during 1L.
I have developed a sincere appreciation for the lifestyle and restaurants in University City over the last few months. UC is excellent for student budgets: for about $12 per person you get an entire feast at The Greek Lady, a giant cold-banishing soup at the Ramen Bar, or a 15-vegetable salad at Axis Pizza. There's a full grocery store (Fresh Grocer), several nice coffeehouses, and did I mention the 3 block walk to class? In terms of safety it's about the same as Rittenhouse or Center City.
Pros:
- Close to campus (~20 min walk, ~8 min trolley ride)
- Generally safe because University City in general has been highly gentrified.
- Charming and diverse community
- CLARK PARK! (and the Farmers' Market!!!)

Cons:
- No nearby grocery stores (except Fresh Grocer which is gross)
- Can be sketchy after dark
It's hard to pinpoint exactly where University City is right now as a neighborhood, because it's changing so rapidly. It's gone from one of the most dangerous campuses in the country ~5 years ago to incredibly safe. With the new FMC Tower going up at 30th/Walnut, it's hard to say exactly what this area will be like next year... but it's only getting better. It's a nice way to avoid Rittenhouse prices while still being only a stone's throw away from Rittenhouse (and yet at the same time not sacrifice on proximity to campus).
I am right by Clark park which is on the border or UC and West Philly. It is much quieter and more residential. The food scene is incredible with lots of smaller, family-owned restaurants serving food from many different cultures. There have been no major crime issues as well.
