Getting out of the Ann Arbor "bubble"
If you're a medical student and not looking to live in the White Coat area or Kerrytown, consider living in Ypsilanti. 5 miles away is just the right amount to create a bit of physical and mental distance. This property in particular isn't spectacular, but is located within easy walking distance of a bus-line that goes to the hospital and medical school. Ypsilanti is a great community with a lot of pride, and an up-and-coming food/arts/festivals scene.

Outside the Ann Arbor "bubble"
If you're looking to create a little distance between campus and your residence, I suggest Ypsilanti. This property is nothing special, but it's location makes it just 5 miles from campus, close to a large variety of restaurants/grocery stores, and a 5 minute walk to the bus-line that goes right to the hospital/med school.

Away from the A2 bubble
As a medical student, I intentionally wanted a living space quite separate from campus and have enjoyed having that distinction. It has led to a unique social experience not defined by/limited to Ann Arbor. By being only 5 miles out though, I'm not far from campus (a 15-20 minute drive). In addition, the bus stop is a 7-minute walk from my door and, although the times aren't incredibly frequent, the ride is only 20-35 minutes. At first, the residence was quiet, though I have noticed more noise from the parking areas in recent months (and more ambient noise from adjacent neighbors as well). The cost is reasonable (I moved in July when they were offering a deal) and I am close to restaurants and grocery stores. By choosing an enclosed layout versus the open air connection of some of the units, I've also inadvertently saved significantly on heating.
