Better than campus walk

Even though we faced a few issues with the management, chapel tower is a very convenient place to live in. There are 3 different buses that go to the University and to other important locations. The rent is on the cheaper side and the assistant manager, Brenda is extremely nice.

Good option for students

Overall fine experience. Good for students because of affordability and right across the street from Duke’s campus. Apartment interior is very nice- new kitchen appliances, W/D in unit. Apartment complex itself is a little sketchy but is kept safe.

Pretty good place overall

Best in terms of proximity to Campus. Decent sized apartments. Barely any cockroaches seen till now. Suggest others to live on floors other than the ground floor.

Chapel Towers and general tips

Chapel Tower is a good deal - it's affordable, spacious and very close to campus with access to these different bus stops that should take you anywhere around Durham. It's also DukeVan accessible. The rent is inclusive of maintenance charges. When it comes to finding places to stay in Durham, disregard rumors/stories about places being unsafe and use your instincts to find a place to stay.

Worked well for us!

One of the cheaper options close to campus (be sure to ask for the student discount and furniture package, don't get tricked into the utilities package -- ends up costing you a lot more than setting up the utilities on your own). First off-campus stop on the Lasalle Loop with option to take the H-5 for a quick trip to campus. 15-20 minute walk to the Engineering Quad, West Union, and Wilson Rec Center. Management is a little unorganized but very polite and maintenance is extremely responsive. Compared to other complexes with similar rent prices and commute times, this is one of the safer options. Security and safety precautions could you a lot of work but as a young female I felt safer at Chapel Tower than most of the other complexes in the area. A good mix of students and families in the community. No fitness center on site, but you get access to the pools, fitness centers, tennis courts, etc. for the other complexes GSP owns (most within a 5 minute drive).

Chapel Tower Apt Review

I really enjoy how much natural light the apartment gets! It's very close to campus and sits right on quite a few bus lines, so you can easily walk or ride a bike on nice days or catch the bus when it's raining or super cold. The apartment is also clean on the inside and was recently updated. I don't like that it is not very secure as you don't need a key or a code to drive into the complex, but nothing has happened yet! I also like that my neighbors are very friendly and very diverse. There are a lot of families with small children who live here and it's nice to hear them playing outside. The second room and the bathroom are a little small, but the living room is spacious! Whenever we've had a problem with the apartment, management has always been quick to respond and deal with our issues.

Great apartment for price you pay.

Not as luxurious as other apartments but you get a lot for what you pay for. It's clean and nice during the winter but in the summer you'll probably encounter some bugs.

Besides that, its very close to Fuqua and a pretty nice community.

Getting around Erwin - LaSalle

Erwin - LaSalle Reviews

430 reviews
It's been perfectly fine. People are nice but it's not much of a community, just a place where people live. Behind the Belmont which had a spate of robberies a few months back, but the Flats is further away from the main road and is better lit. So far no security incidents or concerns at the Flats. Affordability depends on which apartment complex you choose in the Erwin-LaSalle area. Wide range in rents, ranging from very expensive to very affordable depending on which one you pick.
The broader neighborhood's chief attribute is convenience to Duke. A lot of students live in the apartment complexes around here. It can be inconvenient sometimes getting to a supermarket from the neighborhood, though (eventually they're going to re-open a Harris Teeter on Hillsborough, which should mitigate this issue somewhat).
The neighborhood was perfectly fine when I started living there, but recently there have been some armed robberies in apartment buildings that are about a 10 minute walk away. However, I would like to say that I have not felt unsafe walking home at night and the security at Trinity is quite high. For example, you have to use a special key to get into the lobby (where a security guard sits after dark) and then you have to use the key to get in from the lobby to where the rooms are, and then again to get into your room. There are about 10 good restaurants within walking distance ranging from greek food to Mexican food to sushi so it's great for a quick dinner when you don't want to cook. There is also a hair salon and a manicure place, as well as a Walgreens pharmacy. We are very close to Duke Hospital and the bus systems are very accessible.
The apartments are close to campus and easily accessible through bus, bike, or walking if desired. There is a nearby Kroger that is a less than 5 min drive away just up LaSalle St. Overall, there are some older apartments further up the road that have had issues with crime in the past, but The Heights and other apartments around the area seemed to be insulated from those issues.
The food in the area is really accessible and I feel quite safe in the surrounding area, excluding the gas stations and bus stop. I've heard some odd things at night but never seen anything fishy and feel safe coming home at night. +Tons of dogs!
Lofts is right next to a few restaurants - TGIFridays, Chipotle, Enzo's, Noodles, Smash Burger, Sushi Love, etc. The Kroger grocery store is just a few minutes away, off of Lasalle. This is a quiet neighborhood.
Quiet neighbourhood. Conveniently located to West Campus and walking distance to Fuqua. Easy and healthy fast food options nearby. Close to food stores e.g. Kroger & Harris Teeter. Close to WaDuke trail.
Not the safest neighborhood and has little transit. There have been issues at other apartment complexes with safety, but Heights has been very safe. It is absolutely fine to walk around in the day here, but not at night. There are not very many restaurants or bars nearby, although downtown Durham is 10 minutes away.
