Good price

Would’ve moved after a year if not for pandemic. Too far out from campus and not accommodating for larger dogs

Summit Hills

Summit Hills is a big complex of apartment buildings lined up along a hill that is at the intersection of 16th Street and East West. It is literally a block up from the DC/MD border, so it is VERY close to DC. There is a metro station in walking distance and downtown silver spring is a short walk or drive away. The complex supports graduate and professional school students with waived security deposit and automatic approval (no credit check run). Addionally, the aparrtment units all come with utilities included and a rent that is at least 200 dollars cheaper than nearby apartments. I was surprised with how spacious the apartment is - all the rooms have ample space! The only downside is the bathroom is small - but I'm not in there s much as my bedroom or living room, so the compromise is something I can live with. Huge windows throughout the apartment let in a lot of light and make it feel more spacious and bright. I was really happy choosing this place and its only 12 -20min drive (without and with traffic) from Howard! Not a bad choice and the rent is cheap but the quality isn't compromised. I don't have to worry about pests or other issues other complexes that are cheap tend to have. The building I'm in has regular cleaning staff that maintains the grounds and I have not have any issues. The walls are also VERY THICK! I live with my sister in a 2bedroom/1bath unit and we can't hear each other even in seperate rooms. We have to be in the same room to talk/hear each other. Its great for studying because I will study in my room or the living room, while she is listening to music or watching TV in her room. I don't hear her at all!

Also, if you do have a pet dog or cat, the apartment is pet friendly! I think cat rent is 40 dollars and dogs is 50, but double check that!

Good for its price

Summit Hills is good for what you pay for. It is close to downtown Silver Spring but has a lot of room unlike more expensive and smaller apartments in DC. Management is responsive but maintenance is slow and not very helpful. The building is old and they repaint over a lot of things but as long as you are proactive in calling when things need repair, I think it should be fine.

Great place.

I have no complaints at the moment. Generally I am very satisfied with my stay. The gym we are supposed to have access to is closed because of reconstruction and COVID. They haven’t made any accommodations for that. Hallways occasionally smell like weed but it never smells in my apartment.

Perfect living and study space

Very good experience. The staff is very responsive if things go wrong. The building is old but they replace the carpet, bathtub, and toilet seat/covers when you move in so it feels new. They also repaint the walls. My roommate had an issue with the ceiling of her bathroom leaking, but they came in and fixed it within 2 weeks. Other than that, they are very responsive to repair requests, mostly within a few days.

Great place

It’s nothing fancy but I share it with two students and we’ve lived there all three years. Plenty of living room space and it’s comfortable. The other residents are mainly young people and families, which is really nice. I’ve loved living here and would recommend it to anyone who wants to save money, and doesn’t need the luxury amenities other places offer.

Good Place to Live

The management team is great and the service team is also very responsive with any issues we have. The neighbors are friendly, the building is very safe, and we are also within walking distance of downtown Silver Spring. The only issue we have had is a mice problem. The building is older and mice keep coming in no matter what preventative measures we take.

Getting around Silver Spring

Silver Spring Reviews

Slower pace, smaller and safer than DC, but has all the same offerings. Ethnic restaurants, shopping, nightlife, nature trails, public transit, farmers market. Very diverse, aesthetically pleasing and walkable.
There is a ton to do in downtown Silver Spring. The Veterans plaza area has great restaurants and bars. The farmers market on Saturdays is huge, and my favorite part of the weekend. Lots of young couples, and families.
I lived in silver spring since undergrad and have no complaints. Front desk does good job of not letting random people into building. You need key fob to access most areas of building so feels very safe
There is a lot of green space, and the walk to the Metro station is really nice. It's quiet, which we really like.
Right in the heart of DTSS so a lot to do and a lot of great restaurants.
It's only a five minute walk to the red line metro stop in downtown Silver Spring (which is only three stops from campus). As someone who does not have a car, it is in an excellent location as everything is within walking distance (although the bigger grocery stores like Giant and WholeFoods are a bit of a farther walk- about a half mile). The apartment is right around the corner from one of Maryland's Federal District Courthouses and a wonderful brewery that offers a lot of fun and safe outdoor dining options due to COVID-19. There is also a farmer's market in downtown Silver Spring's center shopping area every Saturday morning. The noise levels aren't too bad as the apartment is on a side street rather than the main roads in the downtown area.
Pros: Across the street from a park and quiet neighborhood for children to play. The neighborhood is good for a quiet run. 7-11 across the street for quick snack and coffee runs. 5 minutes away from downtown for restaurants, shopping and movies. 5 minutes away from metro station. Grocery stores and mall within 10 minutes.
Cons: Traffic. elevated noise due to multiple high rises amplifying outside noise.
DT Silver Spring is very much a city. It's more diverse that DC neighborhoods tend to be, with people from everywhere, of all income and education levels and of all ages and life-stages. This makes for a pretty eclectic place. There are three grocery stores in walking distance (including a Wholefoods) and the Silver Spring metro and bus station (a hideous looking monstrosity) ensure you can get anywhere pretty easily. The train line can be pretty noisy when the freight trains come through, but you get used to it.
