Recommend a visit
Apartments are on the smaller side, and there is a yearly amenity fee. The amenities are great though, and they host lots of events with free food and drinks for the tenants. Rooftop is nice, and you can see the Washington Monument. No pool.

Living at Highland Park at Columbia Heights
I have lived at Highland Park at Columbia Heights for 2 years and in my last few months of living here as I am getting ready for residency. The medical school is about 1.1-1.3 miles depending on which way you walk which takes about 20-22 minutes. Parking is an additional $250 on top of your rent if you have a car. It is worth to pay to park rather than getting DC tickets and having them move your car. Electricity depends on if you use the AC and Heat. Can range between $55 - $80 per month. Internet is $85 ish per month. There is a gym inside the building that you pay with for you amenity fees which is convenient. The staff are professional and willingly to help you.

I like it here
I love living at Highland Park! It's right in the center of Columbia Heights but the walls are thick enough that noise only comes through when the window is open. My roommates and I all have good sized bedrooms and the gym and courtyards are great.

Experiences at Highland Park
I moved into HP when I moved to Washington, DC, and decided to stay even after two leases expired. For my first space in DC, I enjoy living here. The building itself is situated on the corner of 14th/Irving, across the street from Target and the rest of DC USA, Chick-Fil-A, Taco Bell, Chipotle, Starbucks, and many other quick grabs. Giant is a block up the street on 14th/Park. The Columbia Heights Metro Stop (Green/Yellow Line) is directly under the building, convenient for getting down to U Street for nightlife. Downside: location compared to American University is a bit of a commute. You would have to take the Green/Yellow Line to transfer to the Red Line, then transfer to a bus to get you onto campus. I take an Uber when I want to get to campus and it runs about 15$ during the day.
I share my space with a roommate and we both have our own bathroom, the kitchen is a good size, washer/dryer in the unit, and our apartment has a small balcony. For an apartment, it is a good size with ample space for working and relaxing. The building amenities are good: the gym is recently renovated with equipment for all types of workouts, there is a Business Center with computers and printers, a party room that can be used or rented, a courtyard with two Bocce courts, and the rooftop with firepits that overlook DC and the Washington Monument. Seeing the fireworks for July 4th is one of the best views. Downside: my apartment faces Irving Street which is busy during the day and early evening. Between fire trucks, traffic, and people doing regular business, one can hear the noises from the street.
Management and maintenance are responsive in making sure everything stays up-to-date and fixed, but their communication can be delayed (sending out important notices at the last minute or after something happens). Our front desk staff is extremely nice and my dog enjoys getting treats from Ms. Gwen (the nighttime front desk person).

Great location, VERY CLEAN!
I just love that the cleaning staff keeps the place looking like a space ship. It's perfect. The location is wonderful right on top of the CH metro stop. The price is a bit expensive but honestly once you look at all the amenities included it's totally worth it.

Amazing Experience
Lived here for almost 1 year, and couldn't have been happier with my experience.
-Great building management that is courteous, organized and super-responsive.
-Very good insulation (no noise from the neighbors) and sturdy construction
-Extremely clean common areas (never once saw a bug or pest)
-Packages delivered to your unit each day
-Good washer dryers; rarely any line or wait
The only significant downsides were street noise (sirens on 14th)

Highland Park DC
Highland Park is a great place to live and it's literally at the Columbia Heights metro. The building is an oasis in the middle of a bustling area featuring a 24 hour Giant, Target, Bed Bath and Beyond and many other well known shops and restaurants.

Columbia Heights Reviews
Regarding neighborhood safety, there are occasionally shootings unfortunately. I have never personally felt unsafe even at night, but realize others might feel so.
If you value quiet, try to go a block or two away from 14th street (which is a popular artery for fire engines / ambulances / police cars - i.e. lot of sirens).
Con: Increasing amounts of gentrification in this neighborhood is increasing rent prices
