The Avalon at Foxhall

Overall, it is a great location to live at and attend AU. Everything is pretty good except management takes a long time to respond to emails and aren't super professional. Otherwise, it is a nice building, everyone is very nice, and it is close to campus.

Decent location but could do without the undergrads

Overall, my apartment is a nice apartment that has a decent kitchen and bathroom along with an in-unit washer and dryer. However, I wish that I was closer to campus and the street that I lived on had more street lights. Massachusetts Ave is poorly lit at night, and it is incredibly difficult for me to navigate back to my place at night. In addition, on Friday and Saturday nights my neighbors, who are mostly undergrads love to party at night. Outside of my door, I can hear a ton of screaming and yelling, which is incredibly disruptive to me. I wish that AU offered an apartment complex or dorm that was exclusively for grad students and had a bus that would take students directly to campus.

Close and nice, but expensive

It’s a 10 minute walk to campus, which is very convenient. The apartment itself is relatively updated, and we have not seen any mice or cockroaches. The views from the balcony are gorgeous. However, the price is very high and increased over the two years we lived there. In addition to that it’s not close to any stores. The nearest giant is a ten minute walk.

Close to Campus

I’ve lived here since going to undergrad at American. It’s very close to campus and because of that has a lot of AU students, mostly undergraduates. It is close to a Giant and bus routes. I would recommend for graduate students who are working or do not need to be on campus regularly to be somewhere either closer to public transportation, closer to a downtown space, or somewhere that is more cost-effective or has more included. The real pro of this building is its proximity to campus and lack of any real issues.

College Apartment

Its close to AU which is ideal for students, however their constant presence does take a toll on the building. Weekends are very loud. Rent in pricy but - hey - we live in DC. View is amazing and there are often beautiful sunsets. It's a good temporary place, but I wouldn't want to live here forever.

Management problems

I went to American University and just moved out from Avalon. I've lived here for the past three years and I'm glad I can write a review. Avalon came to my apartment to do a move out inspection, and charged us a certain amount of damage fees. Me and my roommates paid in full amount on time. Avalon insisted that we owe them $200 for two key fobs that were missing. I clearly remembered that I returned them the day after we moved out and asked the office if i was all set. I was told that the fobs were never returned. I returned to the office and requested for video record from the security camera, but they said there is no video available and the person I described who received my fobs wasn't even in office that day. Avalon just kept finding new excuses to avoid showing me any prove of the missing fobs and kept calling me to ask for that $200. I've lived there for so many years and similar cases also happened to my friends. Their management team needs serious training in how to take care of their clients' needs. Apartment itself was fine, a bit overpriced but great location for AU students.

Avalon at Foxhall

This is my favorite apartment. Very nice location nearby a lovely walking trail to Georgetown and the National Cathedral. American University is only one block away which is super convenient and safe area to live in. There's also a rooftop pool, personal washer/dryer in the unit, balcony. There is an attendant at the front-desk at all hours to offer assistance, such as package retrieval, which is a huge plus.

Good for Students

It is great for students who go to AU because it is a short walk from the campus and it is safe. However, it is over priced, full of loud colleg students, much like AU not close to much. The price of rent does not cover electricity, water, cable, Internet or parking

AU graudate

I'm an AU graduate, and I've been living in Avalon since my sophomore year. I like the location, it's very close to the campus, about a 10 minute walk. However, if you want to take metro to other places, you'll have to take the shuttle bus first then transfer to the metro. Other than that, Avalon is a pretty nice place to live.

Cathedral Heights Reviews

I live within walking distance of the university, and half a mile from a grocery store. There is a bus stop right outside the building. The neighborhood is safe and quiet.
An easy walk to school, and an amazing view of the national cathedral. Grocery shopping and restaurants are just a couple blocks away. The 33 bus line is very accessible and consistent. The only problem is that it is a 20+ minute walk to the closest metro stops (Cleveland park and Tenleytown metro stops).
A nice neighborhood with a Giant grocery store, CVS, salon, several restaurants, a Starbucks and bus transit. A nice area, though quite expensive for DC, which you will notice in the clientele that pass through and in the rent prices. Great proximity to the university and bus access to Tenleytown, Glover Park, Friendship Heights, campus, Georgetown and Farragut Square. Other parts of DC are more difficult to get to. Very safe area, though you will occasionally be begged for money or bothered riding buses (though this is the case all over DC MD and VA frankly).
Mclean Gardens is a great little spot, a few restaurants, close to grocery stores, and very walkable!
I went into this a bit on my apartment review. I love living in an actual neighborhood. There's always kids and dogs running around so it feel super safe. I like the front yards, trees, and gardens - definitely doesn't give off the "concrete jungle" vibe. There's not a lot of traffic noise and everything is pretty well maintained. There's some gorgeous Embassies near by which are stunning to look at. Great area for jogging (if you're into that) and right by American without feeling like you live in a dorm.
It seems like if you live or work at AU, this is a great neighborhood for you. Also if you work on the N2/N4/N6 route and want to be sort of tucked-back into the semi-suburbs but won't be bothered by college kids, it's also a great neighborhood for that. Mass Ave South of campus is basically all apartments for a few blocks so that really is the neighborhood. Not that it's not a great neighborhood if you're not involved with AU, but since I went there, most of the people I know around here are affiliated with the school.
Relatively peaceful, quiet, and green neighborhood that’s not too far away from the bustling and louder college residences or town markets. Very walkable, close to the wooden trail, and easy access to transit.
It’s been pretty safe - I think living next to Homeland Security and within AU’s campus helps keep me aware of any potential threats or safety concerns in ways that I wouldn’t if I didn’t live here.
