RE: Abbington West End
Abbington West End has been an excellent fit for my needs. It is less than 10 minutes from campus, fifteen minutes from the city, offers townhouse-style units, and has plenty of parking. The neighborhood has lots of families and children, and at least one school bus stop. Many families also have pets.
In terms of safety, there are very few issues to report. While there are some halfway house residents and similar, most people simply mind their own business. Depending on the season, there are often stray (but not at all aggressive) cats and kittens.
The leasing office features a pool, small gym, and various small amenities (business center, etc.). Management personnel are friendly and often eager to help -- but at the end of the day, Weinstein is still a corporate landlord. Maintenance personnel are professional and almost always friendly. Pest control itself is adequate, but pest control personnel leave much to be desired in terms of helpfulness and professionalism.
In terms of value for money, the units could be better insulated, meaning your power bills may vary. Storage is more than adequate for one person, but gets tight for two. Not a lot of options for internet, though there are reliable providers. Rent captures your water bill, so both are paid at the same time. Overall, approx. $1750 for two bedrooms and 1.5 bathrooms isn't outrageous, especially given the utility of the complex's location.

Nothing Fancy but Affordable
We chose Abbington West End because of the price, floor plan, and proximity to campus. It's definitely one of the more affordable apartments (I pay around $475 a month plus electricity). We liked this 3 bedroom townhome because each of the bedrooms were pretty equal in size and closet space. We didn't want a floor plan that included a "master" bedroom where one roommate would have to pay more rent than the others. I have no complaints about the apartment complex. But it's certainly not fancy. Some things look more cheaply made (counters, kitchen, floors, etc.) but there is nothing wrong with them. I think its a good, basic, first apartment. Super close to groceries, shopping, and class! Family Friendly! Pet Friendly! There is a playground, business center, dog park, gym, and pool, that are all free to use. Lots of parking. I wouldn't recommend this place if you plan on spending lots of time downtown. (Ubers would get expensive and driving after a night out is a no no).
