Older place, cheaper rent

This apartment is on the older side (some units even have lead paint warnings) and it doesn’t have a dishwasher, but otherwise it’s very comfortable living. Utilities are included in the rent, so you can use as much AC or heat as you’d like without worrying about the bill. Things do go wrong sometimes, it is supposed to be a non-smoking building, but on occasion there are strong cigarette smells that permeate entire floors. Right now, there is also a bug problem, but that is new and hopefully being dealt with. Also, only one elevator goes to the basement where the laundry is and so that elevator gets clogged up often. There are few amenities, no gym or any type of rec room, but I like that. I don’t want to pay extra rent for things I know I won’t use.

Meets my needs

The building meets my needs. My apartment is approx 5oo sq ft which is decent for the rent in DC. All utilities are included in the rent. About 3 miles 20-30 minute bus ride from GW campus. Great for bus routes not metro. Lots of closet space.

Chancery Apartments

The apartment is good but old. It is not centralized AC and just has one AC inlet in the hall. The management is revamping the property. Laundry services and bike station is good but charges are there.

No frills, but it’s home

I like the building quite a bit-it’s quiet, well kept, and has a staffer at the front desk 24hrs/day. It’s an incredibly spacious apartment, and it’s easily accessible to Georgetown. The building is also rent controlled, which is useful for budgeting. There are no amenities (no gym, no pool, etc.) but it’s cheap, safe, and well-located.

Great place!

This apartment is a little further up toward Tenleytown/Friendship Heights but it is a great find!

The prices here are also pretty good compared to other apartments and the commute is very easy since the buses to Foggy Bottom come right in front and the ride is only about 30 minutes.

There is laundry in the building and it is rent controlled so although the rent has increased a little since my 1L year, the management cannot arbitrarily decide to raise the rent. That said, the building does not allow pets.

The Chancery is right across from the National Cathedral and is in a beautiful, quiet, tree-lined area. Overall, I would highly recommend this building for students!

Great apartment building in a beautiful area, but a little farther from GW campus.

The Chancery is a great building run by excellent management. It is a little farther from school which can sometimes be an inconvenience but it makes up for it on pricing. Also, many of the apartments have wonderful views and good sunlight! The neighborhood is also very nice as it is right across from the National Cathedral although very few places stay open late. There is no gym in the building but there are several places where you can get a membership nearby in the area and there are no pets. It is also a short walk away from Georgetown which is a nice feature and the 31,33, 30S stop right in front of the building so commuting the 25-30 minutes is very easy.

Overall, it is a lovely building that I would highly recommend, particularly as the pricing (at least in 2016 for a studio) is very reasonable for the area!

Affordable, spacious apartment in a safe neighborhood

I have a 1 bedroom apartment in the Chancery. It's a huge space with plenty of storage available (I have 3 large closets and a pantry!). My apartment faces the building next door, so I don't have as much sunlight as I'm sure the front and back apartments have, but it's still plenty and bright. The building is old, so we've had some plumbing issues last year, but management was great and took care of it quickly and with plenty of communication with the residents. The laundry room is spacious as well with plenty of machines, so getting your clothes done is never a problem. There isn't a gym however, so you would have to get a membership elsewhere. The front desk staff are friendly and helpful. Maintenance requests are filled by the next morning at the latest and emergency situations are taken care of ASAP. They throw social events for the residents every now and then, such as a catered holiday party in the winter. Getting around DC from here is easy as well. Even though we aren't close to the metro (20 minute walk to Tenleytown station), there are plenty of buses on 3 different lines that can get you anywhere. There are also lots of restaurants in walking distance (several places a block away, Glover park restaurants are a 10 min walk), Georgetown is walkable if you are a student or work there, and Giant is just a couple of blocks up.

Cathedral Heights Reviews

I live within walking distance of the university, and half a mile from a grocery store. There is a bus stop right outside the building. The neighborhood is safe and quiet.
An easy walk to school, and an amazing view of the national cathedral. Grocery shopping and restaurants are just a couple blocks away. The 33 bus line is very accessible and consistent. The only problem is that it is a 20+ minute walk to the closest metro stops (Cleveland park and Tenleytown metro stops).
A nice neighborhood with a Giant grocery store, CVS, salon, several restaurants, a Starbucks and bus transit. A nice area, though quite expensive for DC, which you will notice in the clientele that pass through and in the rent prices. Great proximity to the university and bus access to Tenleytown, Glover Park, Friendship Heights, campus, Georgetown and Farragut Square. Other parts of DC are more difficult to get to. Very safe area, though you will occasionally be begged for money or bothered riding buses (though this is the case all over DC MD and VA frankly).
Mclean Gardens is a great little spot, a few restaurants, close to grocery stores, and very walkable!
I went into this a bit on my apartment review. I love living in an actual neighborhood. There's always kids and dogs running around so it feel super safe. I like the front yards, trees, and gardens - definitely doesn't give off the "concrete jungle" vibe. There's not a lot of traffic noise and everything is pretty well maintained. There's some gorgeous Embassies near by which are stunning to look at. Great area for jogging (if you're into that) and right by American without feeling like you live in a dorm.
It seems like if you live or work at AU, this is a great neighborhood for you. Also if you work on the N2/N4/N6 route and want to be sort of tucked-back into the semi-suburbs but won't be bothered by college kids, it's also a great neighborhood for that. Mass Ave South of campus is basically all apartments for a few blocks so that really is the neighborhood. Not that it's not a great neighborhood if you're not involved with AU, but since I went there, most of the people I know around here are affiliated with the school.
Relatively peaceful, quiet, and green neighborhood that’s not too far away from the bustling and louder college residences or town markets. Very walkable, close to the wooden trail, and easy access to transit.
It’s been pretty safe - I think living next to Homeland Security and within AU’s campus helps keep me aware of any potential threats or safety concerns in ways that I wouldn’t if I didn’t live here.
