Downtown

"Heart of the City"
Often referred to as the business district of Cleveland, it is a great place to live, work and play. It has something for everyone to enjoy and opportunities for fun activities, attractions and innovation. Downtown is surrounded by Lake Erie offering gorgeous views and landscapes. One of the best proponets is that it is 100% walkable so you can get to and fro without skipping a beat.

The food and entertainment spruces up the area with hot spots like Alleyway Allure of East 4th Street, the Riverside Shenanigans down in The Flats or the bright marquees and Broadway showstoppers in Playhouse Square. Some of the best attractions in downtown include the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Cleveland Metroparks Zoo, Public Square, Great Lakes Science Center, House of Blues Cleveland, and Nuevo Modern Mexican & Tequila Bar.

Downtown — 8.3/10 Rating (based on 35 neighborhood reviews)
I have lived there over 2 years, and there has only been one incident of a serious safety issue since I've been there. It is around a lot of bars, but no one has made me feel unsafe walking to and from my car at night, which is located in a parking garage across the street. In the winter, the roads are usually cleared of snow quickly and salted regularly.

Nightlife is great and being located in the Gateway district, there is close access to sports games as well. East 4th St. has wonderful restaurants and bars and is very safe. You do however need to be aware of where exactly you are at night, as sometimes walking one block off the main path will put you in a dangerous area. Public transit, especially the HealthLine, is very convenient and brings me from right outside my door straight to UH.

Downtown in Cleveland is perfect. A quick uber to any other neighborhood, close to tower city, and all highways meet downtown. Traffic because of that can be annoying but realistically only if you're on ninth and/or trying to get on the highway and only from around 4 to 6.

I feel very safe here. Indoor and outdoor parking (between $120-150/month) but it is gated and extremely safe; cameras all around. Overall, it's a very young area and I always feel safe walking around.

It is located right downtown on Euclid Avenue. The area seems pretty safe during the day, however it does not feel safe at night. The area also gets extremely busy when there is a sporting or other event happening downtown. I have also found that a lot of shopping has to be done outside of downtown.

The location of the building is great in the sense that you are close to anything you may need. There are grocery stores, bars, restaurants, sport stadiums, and public transport within minutes of walking. Which is great and very convenient if you don't want to have a car! The only drawback is that there is a lot of transit of people during the day, sometime drunk people due to the casinos or the sports game, and sometimes homeless. Which can make it feel unsafe to go out at night. However, there is a lot of security around the square and inside the building 24/7.

Because of covid, I think the downtown scene has changed a lot since I’ve been here. Everyone says downtown Cleveland is pretty dangerous but I haven’t felt that way about the area immediately around the Bingham or the flats. The public square area and playhouse square can be a little sketchy at night and there are a good amount of homeless people there.

Stuff to do here and there. Major qualms is that occasionally it can feel a little unsafe due to the people walking around downtown. As a relatively large white male I could see others feeling even less safe in the same circumstances however I have no had any unsafe encounters since living down here. As mentioned in a previous review walking distance to Brown's stadium, East 4th, and numerous other bars and restaurants.

Living downtown isn't for everyone, but as someone who enjoys the city, East 4th street is a great place to live. As a Case grad student I love living right by a Healthline stop, which means I don't need to purchase a university parking pass and drive to school. I'm a 3 min walk from Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse, a 5 min walk from Progressive Field, and a 20 min walk from the Cleveland Browns stadium. East 4th Street itself offers tons of food and entertainment options, from bars to restaurants to clubs to a comedy club and bowling alley. While this is great for stuff to do, it can also making driving and parking a nightmare if you're hosting visitors any time that there is an event going on in CLE. Additionally, resident parking downtown is minimum $150-200/mo., so you'll want to factor that into your rent if you have a vehicle.

Living downtown is a lot of fun. There is a lot to do here that I had not experienced much of before because it is a little difficult to come downtown if you live elsewhere in the city and are driving. Community is great and growing. I use the public transportation heavily as well.

Playhouse Square is among the largest theater districts in the country after Broadway. It is safe and separated from the hustle and bustle of crazier bar scenes. The RTA picks up directly in front of the building and drops off in front of the HEC.

Downtown has an air quality issue. This is often due to construction, fuel, buildings trapping gases, etc. One should always watch where they're going because the sidewalks can have anything from vomit to fecal matter daily.

Expect to interact with homeless individuals daily. Often, they simply ask for change or a cigarette. Most will simply accept that most people will decline or shake their head or walk by. Occasionally, one can encounter a persistent or aggressive homeless individual. Safety is to always walk in a group or near other people to reduce chance of harassment. Downtown has the appeal of numerous businesses and parks to explore.

I love living Downtown. It is a quick commute to CWRU’s campus. There are many restaurants and other places nearby in walking distance. Driving to another area isn’t bad either. For example, Lakewood is only a 12-15 min drive. There are many events always happening downtown, like sports games, which can be easily accessed by walking. The only issue is parking for guests. My apartment has a garage for residents but no guest parking. Finding a safe and secure parking spot downtown can be very hard, and once a spot is found there are often restrictions and or high prices.

The neighborhood provides easy access to restaurants and bars located in the Flats. There are also two parks close by: one along the river and another closer to the Brown's stadium. There is a small market that is about a 2 min walk from the Archer and is easy for picking up small items I forgot. Easy access to multiple highways and mins from restaurants, breweries, and the Western Market in Ohio City.

For the most part I don't think I've really taken full advantage of living downtown. I live within walking distance of a number of great bars and restaurants but have only made it to a few. The city is not quite as bustling as I expected, but that may be a positive for some. There is a large number of homeless individuals though and many may ask for money. I have always felt safe, but I can imagine others not feeling safe in my situation.
