LA has its ups and downs. Yes, you encounter a solid amount of unhoused people. About 70-80% keep to themselves or might ask you for some cash/food. It's bustling with diverse groups of people, from business/finance/legal professionals to blue collar workers taking the bus to their jobs. There are lots of things to see so long as you keep an open mind.

Being in the outskirts of downtown LA, the neighborhood is not the best. However, it is really close to everything and there is great food around. I do think the pros outweigh the cons since it is so close to campus and it is no different than a lot of areas in LA.

Tuscani Villas
DTLA comes with it some of the most unique and iconic bars in all of LA... it also comes with significant homelessness problems which then lead to crime, etc. There are attempts to clean it up but I doubt it'll be successful. On the positive side, there is significant investment in DTLA so that'll hopefully drive more money, lower house prices.

There is nothing in Westlake. Fortunately Wilco is really right o the edge of Koreatown and Westlake. You are a 4-7 minute drive (depending on whether you hit the traffic lights) into the heart of Koreatown, which has an excellent bar and restaurant scene. Westlake itself is highly sketchy, with attractions (such as the Original Tommy's Burgers and the Hayworth Theater) spread out. The largest "attraction" is McArthur Park which is pretty but frequently overrun with homeless encampments. Wilco itself shares a block with the Hayworth Theater and Wi Spa, however, which is nice.

Echo Park! So many people love this place and it's not hard to see why. The restaurants, bars, and coffee shops are incredible. Everything is within walking distance, and transportation is super easy to find. It's so cute and mostly safe.

Downtown LA has a lot to offer, lots of restaurants and bars within walking distance or a short Uber ride. It’s pretty central to many areas as well as school. Depending on specific area and time of day it can be a little bit unsafe but as long as you are smart about it, you’ll be fine. It’s a great place if you don’t have a car since most things are pretty central but it’s pretty far from the beach

You are within walking distance of 7th on Fig which has a Target, Nordstrom Rack, lots of eateries. Portions of the area feel relatively safe, but you are in a downtown area, so use caution. I would not feel safe walking to school from here.

Access to DTLA is great, very close to Fig at 7th and other fun spots downtown. Apartment is on the border of DTLA and Westlake. Have seen a couple of cars, street parked on Garland, that have had their windows smashed in. Apartment is also very close to several houseless encampments. Despite its extremely close proximity to LLS, I choose to drive to campus because I do not feel safe walking as a woman, alone.

The neighborhood is not the greatest, but it's also not the worst. I feel safe walking to and from class, but would probably stay in groups around nighttime. I have gone out at night several times on my own with no issues, but I still wouldn't recommend it.

Neighborhood is essentially downtown LA one direction and Westlake the other. I do not venture into Westlake at all so it is hard for me to answer, whenever I walk anywhere it is toward downtown LA. I did walk to campus to begin the year but the walk in between the apartment and campus is a little sketchy, particularly when you get closer to Loyola.

Westlake has a lot of history, and the vast majority of people living there are hispanic. Though it has a reputation for being a dangerous place, we've never had a negative experience. It's super close to downtown LA, and has incredible access to public transit. Plenty of food and grocery stores nearby.
