Eagle Heights

Great Apartment Community for Families and Students
Eagle Heights is located on the northwest edge of UW-Madison’s campus. This neighborhood is full of apartment buildings surrounded by woods and right around the corner from Lake Mendota.

Here, you can enjoy a nice picnic while the little ones have fun in the playground. You will also find a central community center, a hub for social events and programs that bring neighbors together, and one of the oldest community gardens in the United States. At the garden, rent out plots to grow your food! Go shopping at Orange Tree Imports and check out some science museums around.

Eagle Heights — 8.5/10 Rating (based on 11 neighborhood reviews)
The neighborhood is very pleasant. Lots of families and green spaces to walk/run. It is quiet and uncrowded in Eagle Heights. The surrounding neighborhood of Shorewood Hills is great and the picnic point trail area is close by.

There are tons of parks within Eagle Heights for kids, all of them just a walk away. You're so close to line 80 which runs about every 10 minutes or so, depending on the time of day. It's a very quiet and safe neighborhood, and is very family friendly. Not much nearby in terms of restaurants, and the closest grocery store is Copps which is about a 5 - 10 minute drive away (no bus line goes out that way from Eagle Heights).

Shorewood Hills is situated in the heavily wooded areas along the west edge of the UW campus. The two areas of the neighborhood are 1) UW run housing (Eagle Heights/University Houses) and 2) the general residential area. The residential area is one of the quietest, upscale areas of Madison, and one of the best school districts for elementary school. The west edge of the neighborhood is made up of the Lake Shore Preserve with several miles of walking/running trails and the beautiful campus destination of Picnic Point. Two primary means of transportation to campus are personal vehicle and the 80 bus. The Hillsdale Mall area offers nearby shopping at the intersection of University Ave and N Midvale Blvd. This shopping area is a 1.5 mile walk (one way), very convenient if you have access to a vehicle and slightly more difficult if taking the bus. Overall, the neighborhood offers a wonderful combination of access to campus, access to shopping and community quality, all within a beautiful natural surrounding.

It's tucked away behind the hospital which means that it isn't loud and is very peaceful. The flip side is that there really isn't any restaurants within walking distance though. The 80 bus goes everywhere on UW's campus and goes right through Eagle Heights which is a huge plus for students. It's very affordable since it's subsidized by the university.
