Good value apartments

Within walking distance of Duke Hospital (~10 min to Duke North, 20 min to TSCHE). Apartment is comfortable and clean, good response time to work orders we put it. The gym was renovated last year and has 2 Peloton bikes; there's a pool too.

Finding Housing is complicated

I lived at the Belmont for the past year. When I got my apartment, it was very popular and you needed to lock your lease in very early (march). This past October and November, the apartment complex experienced many incidents including armed robberies, one of which occurred at 8pm (that's early). As a response, some people moved out because they didn't feel safe anymore. I admit I didn't feel safe anymore either, but I didn't move out. The apartment complex hired security, which is on property 6pm-6am. There haven't been any incidents since, I am writing this at the end of January. To be fair, there have been incidents in the surrounding apartments as well, so it is not a Belmont problem only. There is a security alarm in the apartment, which I use regularly. Even though it is "gated" community, the gate is open all the time during the day, and it is often broken. Other than the security concerns, I am happy with the apartment and the community overall. The apartment is a little old.

Safety problem in Belmont

Last thanksgiving, there were 7 robs in Belmont. But, on the other hand, now police will go around during night so the safety in Belmont can be ensured somehow. By the way, the manager here is really nice, he tried everything to retrieve the safety and allowed us to move out before the end of contract.

Overall Good

I am actually pretty satisfied with the Belmont Apartment. It has a nice view of forest, lake, and grassland. Besides, there is a pool, a gym and the lounge where we can all relax. And transportation is also very convenient. I even made a lot of friends here.
But in the past semester, there were five armed robberies happened in the Belmont Apartment, which reflected a severe safety problem. Even if the community make some remedies, but we are still quite worried.
One last thing, the rent is a bit high.

Belmont Review

Pros to living at the Belmont:
- Close to the Lasalle Loop bus stop. If you prefer to walk to the engineering quad for class it takes 15-20 min max from the apartment complex. One of the most important items for me choosing the Belmont was the location to campus.
- The gym is brand new and has extensive amount of free weights, machines, and a separate cardio room with free space for your own exercises.
- The management hosts get togethers in the clubhouse and provides food. Great way to meet others as well as voice any concerns to management.
- The maintenance is very quick to respond to issues (usually within 24 hours) and the online maintenance portal is very efficient to use to put in a request.
- The floor plans are spacious and clean. The Belmont keeps the outside of the apartments looking well, landscape is a priority for them, and the place is well-lit at night when you come home from campus.
- The Belmont is also quieter than most. Much more graduate students and early career professionals living in the area than other apartment complexes.
- Parking is extensive, no need for a permit as there is plenty of space, and there is no need for visitor parking - your friends can park close to our apartment.
- There is a package locker pick up area. Your packages (if they are small or average sized) will be placed in the locker area and you can pick it up at your convenience. Very nice if you are away for the weekend or aren't home. Larger packages will be placed on your doorstep.
- You are able to pick your apartment based on the available apartments. So if you want an apartment that gets a lot of sun, you can choose an apartment with a location that would get afternoon sun. If you want an apartment close to the clubhouse or away from the main gate, you can choose an apartment like that from the available apartments.

Getting around Erwin - LaSalle

Erwin - LaSalle Reviews

430 reviews
It's been perfectly fine. People are nice but it's not much of a community, just a place where people live. Behind the Belmont which had a spate of robberies a few months back, but the Flats is further away from the main road and is better lit. So far no security incidents or concerns at the Flats. Affordability depends on which apartment complex you choose in the Erwin-LaSalle area. Wide range in rents, ranging from very expensive to very affordable depending on which one you pick.
The broader neighborhood's chief attribute is convenience to Duke. A lot of students live in the apartment complexes around here. It can be inconvenient sometimes getting to a supermarket from the neighborhood, though (eventually they're going to re-open a Harris Teeter on Hillsborough, which should mitigate this issue somewhat).
The neighborhood was perfectly fine when I started living there, but recently there have been some armed robberies in apartment buildings that are about a 10 minute walk away. However, I would like to say that I have not felt unsafe walking home at night and the security at Trinity is quite high. For example, you have to use a special key to get into the lobby (where a security guard sits after dark) and then you have to use the key to get in from the lobby to where the rooms are, and then again to get into your room. There are about 10 good restaurants within walking distance ranging from greek food to Mexican food to sushi so it's great for a quick dinner when you don't want to cook. There is also a hair salon and a manicure place, as well as a Walgreens pharmacy. We are very close to Duke Hospital and the bus systems are very accessible.
The apartments are close to campus and easily accessible through bus, bike, or walking if desired. There is a nearby Kroger that is a less than 5 min drive away just up LaSalle St. Overall, there are some older apartments further up the road that have had issues with crime in the past, but The Heights and other apartments around the area seemed to be insulated from those issues.
The food in the area is really accessible and I feel quite safe in the surrounding area, excluding the gas stations and bus stop. I've heard some odd things at night but never seen anything fishy and feel safe coming home at night. +Tons of dogs!
Lofts is right next to a few restaurants - TGIFridays, Chipotle, Enzo's, Noodles, Smash Burger, Sushi Love, etc. The Kroger grocery store is just a few minutes away, off of Lasalle. This is a quiet neighborhood.
Quiet neighbourhood. Conveniently located to West Campus and walking distance to Fuqua. Easy and healthy fast food options nearby. Close to food stores e.g. Kroger & Harris Teeter. Close to WaDuke trail.
Not the safest neighborhood and has little transit. There have been issues at other apartment complexes with safety, but Heights has been very safe. It is absolutely fine to walk around in the day here, but not at night. There are not very many restaurants or bars nearby, although downtown Durham is 10 minutes away.
