Windermere House Review

I enjoy living at Windermere House. The desk staff is helpful. While things did break in the apartment, maintenance fixed these issues promptly. It is spacious and while electricity is not included, Com Ed (which will provide your electricity) is super cheap. I secured covered parking across the street too. There is a gym (not amazing but weights, pull-up bar, mats, treadmill). 5 min walk to Trader Joes. It's a 25 min walk to the law school and close to Shoreland and the bus stop to get to school. Only con is the lack of lighting /pretty window views in our apartment.

Good but still need to pay attention to the community safety

It is an ideal place to live in the Hyde Park near to the University, but I would choose to live in the loop considering the safety.

Highly recommend

Terrific value! Front desk is staffed 24/7 by helpful employees who make it a point to remember you. Floor plans are relatively spacious for the money. Very little sound travels. Easy to get to/from campus. Walking distance from a number of restaurants and grocery stores. The area immediately surrounding the complex has always felt very safe. Like many buildings in the neighborhood, this one is old—Windermere was built a hundred years ago as a luxury hotel. Minor maintenance issues may pop up, but in my experience management has been highly responsive.

Historic building with great location!

Pro: the building has great bones, location and staff. It’s older but well-maintained. As a dog owner, I love that there’s a park across the street. And the view is great! It’s also near to Whole Foods. Cons: the biggest inconvenience is that our apartment doesn’t have an in-unit dishwasher. Smaller gripes: since it’s older (I’m guessing), no Nest system - heat controlled by the building. But that hasn’t been an issue so far. We weren’t living here during the summer, so I can’t speak to the AC situation. The lighting is also scarce. We’ve had to purchase a bunch of lamps. But overall, we’ve enjoyed living here.

Relatively cheap apartment with character

Windermere house is notably cheaper than many of the surrounding apartment complexes; and, despite MAC having a bad rep, I haven't had any problems here. Our door was broken, and it was fixed within the week.

It is also much larger than the other apartments I have seen in HP.

Would recommend

Good alternative for anyone who doesn't want to live in Regents/Shoreland. Good location, nice apartments, reasonably priced. Definitely planning to stay in this apartment if I remain in Hyde Park.

Hyde Park Reviews

I prioritized living close to the law school in an area with restaurants, coffee shops, and grocery stores. 5252 offered all these things. I can also easily walk my dogs to the lake from my building.
Comfortable and walkable, decent selection of amenities (restaurants, grocery stores, etc.) and close to the lakefront. Not much nightlife
Hyde Park is a fantastic place to live. My girlfriend and I see ourselves staying there for a long time.
Great neighborhood close to the school. Many students live here, which is good for social events.
Hyde Park is a pretty place, very lowkey though. Not much going on (few bars & restaurants). A bit far from other happening neighborhoods in Chicago. There are crime issues (cars broken in, muggings) but not horrible--just have to be vigilant about avoiding risky situations.
Hyde Park is quiet and feels a bit more like a neighborhood, but it is easy to get downtown via the CTA buses or the Metra Electric. The neighborhood itself has some nice cafes and things, but there is less to do outside the school
Hyde Park is the BEST. It's beautiful, active community of people who just really care about the neighborhood. I feel safer living in Hyde Park than any other neighborhood I've lived in Chicago (Lakeview, Logan, Wicker) because the people who live in HP have done so deliberately; they came here either due to the University or simply a desire to live here, which means people say hi on the street, strike up conversations in grocery lines, remember you when you see them at brunch, etc. That being said, I wouldn't recommend it for people who want to be in the middle of the action (the Loop). I chose HP because I have no patience for the bustle....and because it's way cheaper. My apartment would rent for twice as much if it were near MPP.
I don't get why people dislike Hyde Park so much. Although, to be fair, I do not go out much and when I do, I have a car. But, I really like being able to walk to school everyday rather than have to commute. Plenty of grocery options, especially now that trader joe's is open. Decent number of restaurants around and they're good; nothing spectacular. As for safety, be aware and don't walk by yourself at 2am; use common sense and you'll be fine.
