John Evans Building reviews and highlights
- Kitchen appliances aren't new, but work well
- Quiet surrounding area
- Vintage building, but well maintained
- Great value per square foot
- Very close to Whole Foods
- Utilities included
- Elevator is really small
- Laundry room in the basement can be a little difficult to access
- Great location
Charming and homey but with quirks
Overall I love this building - lots of character, natural light and very spacious. It is an older building so there are a few quirks - drains clog easily, radiators are noisy and we can't really control when they are on or off, and the laundry room is a dungeon. Overall a great place to live and has a beautiful courtyard!

Love it
Although the building is very old, the apt is pretty new in the inside! We love our view and the big windows! It’s a very good deal!

Great value -- no perks but lots of space for the money, plus historic charm!
Old-school Chicago building, no frills but huge units at a great rate and nice chill assortment of Kellogg students. Be sure to get exact photos or a tour of your unit because they have all been updated at vastly different eras, example some have dishwashers and some do not. The building manager, Ramon, is amazing.

Great Value
It's a great building, a decent amount of Kellogg students. It's quiet, each apartment is different so you MUST visit the unit before renting. Honestly, you can't beat the location. Cons: it's an old building, the laundry room is a journey to reach, hallways are a bit scary but the apartments are beautiful.

The best value and the most character!
I am so thankful to have found this apartment building! I find it perfectly suits my tastes, as opposed to the sterile offerings of E2, the dorm-room feel of Optima Horizons, and the poor quality of other lesser-known buildings. Without fail, every friend that comes over says:
1) It's so cozy!
2) You got the best deal
3) I may look into moving in here next year
Pros:
- Can't-be-beat price
- More space than I know what to do with!
- Beautiful crown molding/wood floors
- Big windows with lots of light
- Plenty of Kellogg students (90% of my floor)
- Convenient location next to Whole Foods/downtown
- On an idyllic tree-lined street with beautiful courtyard
- Heated parking garage (not included with rent)
- Great noise insulation between rooms
- Friendly, responsive building supervisor
Cons:
- Dingy hallways
- Washer/dryer in basement side-room (coin-op)
- Room layout varies widely
- Some rooms don't have dishwashers/have old countertops
- Radiator heating
It's definitely not for everyone but, for the right person, 1600 can be a fantastic option.

Beautiful, low-key place to live
I have loved living at 1600 Hinman. There is a good group of Kellogg people living here, but it's a much more low-key, quiet vibe than some of the bigger properties in downtown Evanston. The apartments are really spacious and bright, and our live-in super is very responsive and makes it a great place to live.

Cosy Apartment
It's an old building, without the bunch of amenities other buildings have but it's much more affordable (at least compared with the other offers I had at the time) and feels like a true home, not a hotel room

Amazing Value- Lots of Character
I love living in this building. It is the closest unit to the lake, which is great when the weather is good. Also less than a 15 minute walk to the Global Hub. The building has lots of character and the price cannot be beat. The building handyman is also very responsive.

Cons: Long walk from the Global hub. Closest grocery store is Whole Foods, a bit of a hike to TJ's and Jewel.
