Great choice for Kellogg students who want to live alone in an affordable building

I've loved living in the building. It's no frills, but the apartments are very spacious. I suggest living on the non-courtyard side, because it can be quieter. I haven't been in the 1 bedrooms but have heard that the studios are roughly as spacious. My unit was just renovated and very nice inside. Also, a surprisingly popular building among Kellogg students so if you're worried about being the only one in the building...don't be!

Charming Vintage Apartment

My apartment is a hidden gem. Through the creepy hallways, is my bright and massive 1 bd rm! While it doesn't have fancy amenities, management has been responsive and my experience has been positive. The sq ft/dollar is impossible to beat. Note: all apartments in this building are completely different so check out the individual unit before you commit.

Great price and great location!

Although the building is older, I love living here. It is very spacious, excellent location, and priced low. I lived at Evanston Place the prior year - I moved 1 block to Hinman and saved $1000 a month. I wish I lived here for both years! It is the perfect apartment while a student at Kellogg.

Good value for the price

This is just a bare bones place. There is no gym, and no other amenities. The building itself is really old and kind of run down. However, all the individual apartments are spacious, clean, and fine. The hallways are dirty, the garage is dusty, the stairs also have a layer of dust as well. If you ignore all of those things, for the cheap rent, large apartments, and pretty ideal location this is not a bad place to live. It is not as close to the Glhub as other places farther north but it is closer to all the bars in Evanston. You cannot own a pet if you want to live here though. There is a strict no pets policy even for visitors.

Spacious apt, vintage but old building, great location, no amenities

I love living at 1600 Hinman!
Pros: It is reasonable priced. In a great location (20 min walk to Kellogg, near all the bars/restaurants/grocery stores, on a quiet street). Lots of space. Vintage apartment with character (corner units on floors 1-3 have huge french doors that open to the courtyard/street). Covered parking for $100/mo.
Cons: The building is old and common areas (entrance, hallways) are not updated/well kept. There is a lot of variation between apartments (layout, last update, flooring - carpet vs. hardwood) so see your specific unit before renting. No amenities. Washer & Dryer are in adjacent building (can get there through alley or shared basement/parking garage). No A/C (can put in your own window units).

Charming Older Building - Tons of Space

I am very happy with the John Evans Building. Coming from a walkup in NYC this was a major upgrade. The studio is huge, I have two walk in closets, full kitchen with dishwasher, hardwood floors and tons of sunlight. The building is a 17 minute walk to the global hub and a block from Whole Foods and the rest of downtown Evanston. It is an old building with thinner walls so you can hear a lot of creaks and at times your neighbors. Also can be a bit noisy as it is a lot of undergrads that live there. Other downsides is the laundry room is off the ally so I don't feel safe doing my laundry after dark. There are also a few bugs at time, nature of an older building unfortunately. Overall, great space for the price. If you are looking for a convenient, affordable, less Kellogg heavy building I highly recommend.

Love love love

While this is an old building, it is an absolute gem! The sizes of the apartments are absolutely enormous (for the first time in my life, I have a Carrie-like walk in closet where I have been able to put my shoes on shelves). There is plenty of natural light, the location is superb and it's in a very quiet area. I couldn't ask for more!

Acceptable, not great

I have a large 1-br apartment for not much money. The place is fine, but there are certain frustrations from living in an old building - noisy radiators, creaky floors, shared coin laundry, and just a general feeling that the place is a bit shabby. Maintenance could be better on general upkeep of the building, but has always been responsive to significant requests. That said, I have a lot of space all to myself, in a central location close to downtown and to campus. You can't beat the price for this arrangement.

Biggest, cheapest 1br out there

Not the best building, but worth it for the amount of space i have at a reasonable price.

Downtown Evanston Reviews

Downtown Evanston has everything you need. E2 is walkable to campus, a Target, and plenty of restaurants, as well as Metra and L stations to get to Chicago. Right across the street is a Subway, a Thai restaurant, and a pizza place, plus there’s a 7-Eleven about a block away, so you’re very close to options if you need food in a pinch.
Perfect for grad school at Northwestern, but otherwise feels a bit suburban without a booming downtown. There are some good food/bar options, but also a handful of abandoned/empty retail locations -- I'm hoping that means new coffee shops/food venues are coming, but it doesn't look like it just yet.
All in all ideal downtown Evanston location. Very convenient for public transportation to Chicago, next door to local favorite Bennison's (love the late night smell of donuts baking), and walking distance to plenty of bars, restaurants, and stores. Once the Target goes up by Sherman Plaza and we have an alternative to Whole Foods close by this will be perfect.
McManus is located right next to Evanston downtown, so everything (restaurants, bars, groceries) is very close by. It's also right next to Northwestern campus (~15-18 minutes to Kellogg Global Hub by foot), which helps quite a lot, esp. in the winter when you'd want to keep your commute as short as possible.
There's plenty to do, but it still takes some effort to get downtown. If you want the quickest ride (metra), then you have to plan ahead and deal with the (infrequent) train schedule. The purple line only runs express during rush hour. Depending on the time of day, your commute can run 20 minutes to an hour and a half.
I would 100% live in Evanston when choosing where to live for my time at Kellogg. There are plenty of amenities of all sorts - everything from two (!) Whole Foods and a Trader Joe's to amazing restaurants (Stained Glass, Boltwood, Found) and quick joints (Freshii, Cozy, Blaze, Cheesie's, etc.) to good bars ranging from dive-y (Bat 17) to more upscale (Bangers & Lace) to great retail, workout options (barre, boxing, and regular gyms), salons, and handy storefronts like hardware, cleaners, etc. Feels like home very quickly!
I live just south of the main downtown area, and it's the perfect intersection of being close to the action but also a bit removed when you want some quiet. I like being a in a more residential pocket, so there is slightly less foot traffic and really nice areas to walk around with a dog, etc.
We're one block from the centre of downtown Evanston. Clearly Evanston isn't going to win any awards for nightlife, culture or dynamism. But, you're not going to get than anywhere near campus. Good news is you're 2 blocks from Davis, which gets you to downtown Chicago in 30 mins.
