Van Pelt St

This property is awesome if you snag an apartment when someone moves out. There's a shared courtyard that's often empty, grills to share, a bike rack, etc.

Great apartment

Landlord is responsive and happy to help with small tasks (e.g., mounting a TV on the wall). Some of the appliances are a little older but all work well. There is uncovered bike storage in the courtyard. Good security as the door to the courtyard, your building, and unit are all locked with different keys. Courtyard has a shared bbq.

Perfect Filter Square Apartment

Van Pelt on the Square is an amazing place to live! I love how quiet it is, located on a side street with buildings spread around a courtyard that is locked to the outside. It feels very secure and safe, and packages are protected as they are delivered behind the locked door. The only thing I don't like is the entire unit only has 1 small closet.

An excellent location!

Excellent location, wonderful building, beautiful accents in the apartment. Most importantly, a highly responsive management! Street parking available in front of the apartment complex, making dropping groceries off easy. Also has a shared courtyard outside. Only con is that it is smaller, so would be hard if cooking is very important (every day meals are just fine!) or if there is large furniture (sofa, king bed). Couldn't have asked for a better place to move in a pandemic!

Great location, building a little old

So far it's been a great experience living here. The location is great for an MBA and PhD couple, and my window has a beautiful view of Lombard St. The community is gated and has an indoor locked area for receiving packages as well as a courtyard where people frequently grill or eat outdoors. We have individual air-conditioning units (not centralized with a Nest like my old place) and water-based heating, but it works well. The kitchen is upgraded and the floors are hard wood, but the fireplace is not allowed to be used. The management is responsive. It's very dog friendly (but there is a $500 non-refundable pet fee). I usually can find street parking easily, and there is a great coffee shop and park nearby. It's a great brownstone-style apartment with the benefits of a larger building (like package receiving and on-call maintenance). There is no pool or gym (but not a drawback thanks to COVID).

Highly recommended

Really love living here! Essentials that have lived up to/exceeded expectations: in-unit laundry, very responsive and helpful management, living in a quiet neighborhood along a quaint side street, but close to public transportation/restaurants/many friends and co-residents. Also an unexpected perk: awesome fireplace. Down-sides that were also as billed: somewhat limited storage space and decent sunlight/windows (but wish there was more).

Fitler Square is really cute and homey. It's around a lot of other medical students, so it's a good social area and has an easy commute to school. It's also great if you like running because it's right off the trail on the river. Food is good but a bit homogenous (compared to West Philly especially.
Locust and spruce feel a lot safer than market or chestnut at night. Very residential streets with beautiful brownstones. Also close to dog park and the river walkway. About 10min walk from the popular buildings and 25min walk to huntsman
good place for people new to the city! close to both Penn and a lot of stuff downtown. I never lived in Philly beforehand, and definitely recommend this location
Love the neighborhood! If you're interested in being close to the center of the city and being able to actively explore Philly (for a not extreme price) it was great! Also was easy to get to my school - University of Pennsylvania. 15-20 mins to get to school by transit; 30 mins walking.

That being said I did notice that most students lived on the side of the school!
The beautiful tree-filled neighborhood is full of families, dogs, and students - it is safe, full of great restaurants, and boasts an equally quick walk to both University City and downtown attractions. The immediate access to the Schuylkill River Trail also can't be beat. While we lack apartment amenities, we love living in a historical brownstone that has charm and character. This is an area where you can live as a student and stay for another 20 years after that.
Great neighborhood, though expensive for Philly. If you're a Penn grad student who wants to be near campus but not on campus, it's ideal for distance from school and the Rittenhouse area. Lots of parks and residents are friendly.
There are residents without housing in the neighborhood. They're good people and new residents should be respectful of them and their belongings.
The neighborhood is very residential. Not a ton of bars/restaurants which can be annoying if you just want to pick up food after a busy day, but it's right near the park and Skukyhill river trail which is great for exercising and getting outdoors. Close to Trader Joe's and South Street market which is convenient
Center City is a fantastic area. I live on the northern side of it, which is the more financial/industrial/apartment building side. I live 2 blocks from a busy Trader Joe's and inches away from tons of great restaurants, corner stores, and shops. It's close to Rittenhouse Square, a swanky square block with a tiny park in the middle, as well as the Schuylkill River trail (great for running and biking) and the Art Museum area. Multiple major bus lines slice through this neighborhood, making it quite easy to get anywhere when you don't want to walk or bike.
