Reasonable rent in a convenient location between Durham and Chapel Hill

We have loved living here! The apartment itself is nice - it's not the most recently updated in terms of finishes but is still very comfortable, spacious, and well-maintained. The community is very pretty, with lots of trees and a large pool. Only cons are that the gym is small and does not have much equipment, and that parking garage space costs extra.

Great price/quality

The price has been great. Proximity to campus is great. Easy to have friends visit since there is no resident only parking garage. Still very safe.

Garrett West Review

Living at Garrett West has been a good experience. The main issues we have experienced are with car break-ins, the ice machine lagging, and water issues in terms of cold/hot water control. The management is very responsive and the majority of 1Ls live here.

Garrett West - Recommended

Garrett West has, for the past few months at least, been a wonderful place to live. I would recommend this to law students who are looking for a quieter, more serene living experience, rather than a more lively downtown experience. GW is about 8 minutes from campus towards Chapel Hill (away from downtown), and 15 minutes from the center of downtown (where bars and restaurants are). It is very lush and green with a white picket fence aesthetic. Trash pickup service is included with the very reasonable rent. One complaint: there is no elevator, so it is not accessible to everyone. I live on the third floor, and I have no trouble with it, but others might.

Garrett West

Lots of law students live here. There's a gym, pool, plenty of parking for guests, and the apartments are pretty big. The 1 bed/1baths have great natural lighting. The 2bed/2baths not so much. But all in all I'd recommend living here as I've been here all 3 years of law school.

Good value depending on which apartment you're in

I used to live on a first floor unit by the woods and it was awful. I moved to a second floor unit away from the forest and closer to the pool and it has been a much better experience. Definitely worth what I pay in rent now. Many of my friends live here or in the apartment complex next door. I also love how walkable the neighborhood is.

Quiet complex with lots of space

The apartment itself is a lot of space at a better price than similar apartments in the area. The community is quiet with lots of green space and a dog park and playground. Management has been helpful and quick to respond the over 1+ years we’ve been here. The complex is about 10-15 minutes from campus depending on traffic.

Getting around Garrett Road

Garrett Road Reviews

45 reviews
I have not been through the neighborhood very much, but from what I have seen, the residential side of Garrett Road (west of the Garrett Road / Durham-Chapel Hill Blvd intersection) is quiet and safe. The other side of the intersection however - and even the strip mall on the corner across from the Toyota dealership - is a bit rougher and more commercial of an area.
The location is right of US Highway 15 501. There are numerous shopping options located off of this road. The location also provides easy access to both Durham and Chapel Hill as well as Interstate 40. Also, the trails of Duke Forest are located just west of the property. All of these are positives. The negatives would be that a car is basically required to get anywhere.
There's nothing special nearby, you're kind of isolated, and have to drive to go anywhere fun. But, it's a safe residential neighborhood which is personally what I care about.
Great location between Durham and Chapel Hill. About a 10 min drive to school. Not gated and open air entry ways, so does not feel the most secure at times, but have not had any issues.
It’s very quiet; though, there have been car break ins at GW and other apartments in the area.
This is a very nice neighborhood,. There are many stores close by (driving distance), grocery store, gas station, restaurants, home depot, bed bath and beyond, target, etc., that make it convenient.

There are also 3 schools nearby, less than 5 minutes drive.
There's a Sam's and Super Target and Harris Teeter within 5min. Trader Joe's is 10-15min down 15-501, and the med school is about 10-12min away as well. More suburban with a running trail within a 2min run.
The neighborhood has a lot of traffic, but this community is relatively private, and surrounded by trees, so much of the neighborhood's effects are mitigated.
