Good if you want to live close by

The apartments are nice. Quiet. Convenient location.

If you're trying to live alone, price may be an issue. For some reason, the studio and 1-bedroom apartments at this complex go for considerably more than at other nearby complexes. Should be fine if you get a roommate, though.

MBA living near campus

When I was looking for options to live near Duke, everything pointed to 9th Street. However, the prices didn't align with the apartment qualities, and you definitely need a car (or carpooling friends) to move around. I decided to take a chance on this apartment building, and I don't regret it. The entrance builiding is full of trees and beautiful, the apartments have high ceilings and are very well illuminated. It's close enough to campus to walk, and there's a 10-minute free bus ride to 9th Street. The downside: It's true that not many MBA students live here, but everything is so close that it makes it easier to get around. Alsod the apartments are not the most modern.

Spacious but the pest issue is too annoying

Facilities are great. Room super spacious. But the roaches & ants issue has been too annoying.

Not good as Flats

Lofts is one of the most expensive apartments near Fuqua. But the living experience is not that good. Residents here often comes across cockroachs in their bedroom/bathroom/living room/aisle, almost anywhere. The buildings are quite old. There is only one elevator and one trash chute for every floor. Some rooms far away from elevator and trash chute takes 3-5 minites walk to get there. Some 2b2b here has a room with no door, which is hard for residents to keep privacy with the other roommates. The outdoor swimming pool only cleaned for one time in the morning. In the afternoon occasionally there will be some leaves or bugs floating on the pool. The furniture here is often broken, especially the air conditioning in summer, which often needs maintenance, but the maintenance response is slow, sometimes it takes half a month to repair.

Decent apartment complex within walking distance of campus

Pros:
- Within walking distance of campus so I don't have to buy a parking permit
- Quiet
- Rent increases from year to year have been less than the inflation rate (so actually a relative decrease in rent)
- Maintenance issues have been fixed promptly
- Lots of other med students live in Lofts/Flats/Trinity, so there are lots of friends nearby and people to hang out with

Cons:
- Baseline rent is somewhat pricey but still less expensive than Trinity or Flats
- Maybe 2-3x per year I will see a cockroach in my apartment

Nice space, management is not very responsive

So far my experience at the Lofts has been nice and safe. I do believe the management is a bit slow to respond to requests and can sometimes be a bit unhelpful. They are pretty responsive to urgent issues, though.

Lofts at Lakeview

Overall a good experience and stay.

Generally a clean environment but I had a small garden bug infestation in my apartment near the terrace sliding door due to the summer weather.

Maintenance personnel respond relatively quick and all requests are done through an app. My oven wasn’t working and they came and replaced it with a new one within 3 days.

Amenities are great, outdoor pool, gym, good lounge.

Very expensive relative to other apartments as I am paying $100 per month on top of rent for internet and energy utilities.

Getting around Erwin - LaSalle

Erwin - LaSalle Reviews

430 reviews
It's been perfectly fine. People are nice but it's not much of a community, just a place where people live. Behind the Belmont which had a spate of robberies a few months back, but the Flats is further away from the main road and is better lit. So far no security incidents or concerns at the Flats. Affordability depends on which apartment complex you choose in the Erwin-LaSalle area. Wide range in rents, ranging from very expensive to very affordable depending on which one you pick.
The broader neighborhood's chief attribute is convenience to Duke. A lot of students live in the apartment complexes around here. It can be inconvenient sometimes getting to a supermarket from the neighborhood, though (eventually they're going to re-open a Harris Teeter on Hillsborough, which should mitigate this issue somewhat).
The neighborhood was perfectly fine when I started living there, but recently there have been some armed robberies in apartment buildings that are about a 10 minute walk away. However, I would like to say that I have not felt unsafe walking home at night and the security at Trinity is quite high. For example, you have to use a special key to get into the lobby (where a security guard sits after dark) and then you have to use the key to get in from the lobby to where the rooms are, and then again to get into your room. There are about 10 good restaurants within walking distance ranging from greek food to Mexican food to sushi so it's great for a quick dinner when you don't want to cook. There is also a hair salon and a manicure place, as well as a Walgreens pharmacy. We are very close to Duke Hospital and the bus systems are very accessible.
The apartments are close to campus and easily accessible through bus, bike, or walking if desired. There is a nearby Kroger that is a less than 5 min drive away just up LaSalle St. Overall, there are some older apartments further up the road that have had issues with crime in the past, but The Heights and other apartments around the area seemed to be insulated from those issues.
The food in the area is really accessible and I feel quite safe in the surrounding area, excluding the gas stations and bus stop. I've heard some odd things at night but never seen anything fishy and feel safe coming home at night. +Tons of dogs!
Lofts is right next to a few restaurants - TGIFridays, Chipotle, Enzo's, Noodles, Smash Burger, Sushi Love, etc. The Kroger grocery store is just a few minutes away, off of Lasalle. This is a quiet neighborhood.
Quiet neighbourhood. Conveniently located to West Campus and walking distance to Fuqua. Easy and healthy fast food options nearby. Close to food stores e.g. Kroger & Harris Teeter. Close to WaDuke trail.
Not the safest neighborhood and has little transit. There have been issues at other apartment complexes with safety, but Heights has been very safe. It is absolutely fine to walk around in the day here, but not at night. There are not very many restaurants or bars nearby, although downtown Durham is 10 minutes away.
