American Village — 8.4/10 Rating (based on 34 neighborhood reviews)
Very safe, residential neighborhood. Lots of families and even more dogs. In the Duke Forest, so about ~0.5 miles from running/walking trails. I drive to school (~6 minutes), but there is a bus stop about 200 yards from my door that drops off at Research Drive & Erwin Road (~15 min walk to Sanford).

The community is a mix of grad students, young couples with kids, older people, and lots of dogs, so if you don't want to feel like you're reliving your college days, this community is nice and much quieter than some of the other apartment complexes in Durham.

Close enough to Duke. Feels a bit isolated, which in my opinion is nice. The rent is much cheaper than it is around campus and Duke Forest is nearby which makes it easier to go for hikes.

Location is convenient to Duke's campus and the Sanford School. Also less than half a mile from a grocery store. If you're looking for a location closer to night life, restaurants, bars, etc., this isn't it. Short drive to downtown (about 10 minutes), but if you're looking to walk to downtown/9th street check out somewhere else.

5 minute drive to Fuqua/campus. Highway 15/501 is seconds away, making trips within and outside the city highly convenient. Essentially backs up to the Duke Forest with access to miles of trails.

Main downside is nothing is within walking distance (grocery, restaurants, etc.). Many people in this area bike, but be wary as there are not bike lanes.

Nothing here, not super active neighborhood, dark at night. Not dangerous, but just not lively at night. Also we didn't have any trick-or-treaters at halloween.

Good neighborhood, surrounded by other good neighborhoods. A lot of graduate students and Duke team coaches live here. A fair number of young (<10yr) kids around. A dog park and lots of pets. Forest walking trails. Occasional stolen items in cars when people leave them unlocked.

Very, very safe neighborhood. You could leave doors unlocked, though I wouldn't recommend it. Very secluded and quiet area. All residential -- no eateries or shops in the neighborhood at all. Really close to campus.

American Village is a residential neighborhood without any bars or restaurants, so it's not the most exciting place ever. That being said, it's quiet, right on the edge of the Duke Forest (great hiking trails), a couple minutes away from campus and grocery stores/chain restaurants (Chipotle, chinese, etc), and only about 10 minutes from downtown Durham. We've never felt unsafe or uncomfortable while walking around after dark.
