Yost
Residential Area with Plenty of Reasons to Get Outdoors
This neighborhood gets its name from the university’s former football coach, Fielding H. Yost, who carried the Wolverines to their first national championship in 1901. Yost is home to many students and they enjoy a no-cost Wolverine Tower Shuttle, which transports Yost Neighborhood residents to and from campus. In terms of social activity, there are certainly no shortage of bars and dining options in the neighborhood - including the always popular Fraser’s Pub and frequently visited Lucky's Market. There is also the famous artisan meat, cheese, and sandwich hub known as Biercamp.
In addition to socializing, there are plenty reasons to get outdoors here. Located nearby is the University of Michigan Golf Course and also Burns Park, which has tennis courts, basketball courts, and even a sledding hill for those snow-filled winter days.

Quiet neighborhood a little further from Ross, but well connected via public transit. There are places to eat, parks for pets and kids to play, and overall safe. The tradeoff of distance and price is worth it in my opinion.

Woodbury Gardens
Woodbury Gardens is its own community - so we don't get a lot of surrounding neighborhood effect and it's quieter.
I haven't had to go to school in person yet (due to the pandemic) - but once things are back in person, I would use the community shuttle to get to campus and possibly back depending on the time of day I head back. Otherwise, I would take the bus or walk. Walking takes about 30 min but the bus will cut down most of that since there is a city stop right at the entrance to Woodbury. Keep reading
Woodbury Gardens
Neighborhood with a mix or townies, undergrad athletes and grad students. Great access to local market Argus, a few decent takeout options, and a nice craft beer store. It’s a hike to eat downtown but a great place if you want to be walking / biking distance to campus, but have a quieter more laid back oasis home. Lots of houses and backyards and porches.

Probably one of the best places in Ann Arbor to live in if you don't have a car. It's not the closest to campus or the downtown social scene, but it's a 15 min walk to the law school and a 10 minute walk to a grocery store. The closer you get to campus, the louder it gets, but I've never had an issue with noise from our neighbors.

I like the convenience of getting to Ross in six minutes for class, group meetings, or coffee chats. It’s great to be able to come home and grab a quick bite before changing into a suit and walking back over. Easy walk to hockey games, and about 15 minutes to Bus/Big House. Well situated to make it to social gatherings at Skeeps, Rick’s, Munger, or any other place.

Woodbury is on the other side of Stadium Ave from Burns Park, but it's convenient access. The complex itself is pretty friendly; lots of law students around though it takes a bit of effort to get to know neighbors since everyone is on their own schedules and it's a generally older crowd.

Woodbury Gardens
Very close to law school, which is great. Reasonably easy access to stores on state street and only 20 minute walk from Kerrytown. The new target on State Street makes groceries possible to access without taking a bus to Meijer, and there’s a bus stop right by my apartment, which is great. But Yost is undergrad heavy, so there are often loud parties on weekend nights.

An underrated fact about Woodbury is its proximity to Lucky's Market and a CVS on the corner. I have a car, and appreciate the relative closeness to other areas of Ann Arbor to be able to run a quick errand. If you want a quieter neighborhood and don't need to be in the center of the social life at Ross, this is the place for you.

In my first year, the neighborhood was super rowdy with all the undergrads partying until 2am in the morning on most weekends. I wanted to rip the hair out of my head. But it's been quiet this year -- likely from all the 311 complaints that my neighbors and I have made. It's still nice to live close to school so I don't have to walk very much.

I absolutely love Burns Park, especially during COVID. I love seeing families and not just college students. I walk around the park probably every day. The neighborhood is great - definitely more quiet than living closer to campus, but still very easy to get around. It's about a 25 minute walk to Michigan Central Campus, but only about a 5 minute drive. Overall, a nice and quiet neighborhood that feels secure and is slightly removed from campus, so you're away from the hustle and bustle of the University. Definitely a grad student neighborhood. The neighborhood is very charming and close to campus (approx. a 12 min walk to the law school). Our next door neighbors on both sides are undergrads, but they are great. The neighborhood becomes more residential the closer you get to the park, which is a 5-10 min walk away from the house. Cute, quaint. It's all owned by the same property owner, it's a pretty decent-sized loop consisting of two connected streets. Lots of big trees, a couple of parks, a dog park, barbecues, a pool and clubhouse, and a bus stop on the edge of the community. It's walking distance from the law school, although pushing it. Probably not walkable in the winter. The biggest issue is that it is not near any grocery stores. At least a few miles to even the closest grocery store other than trader joe's, which I would say doesn't always have the essentials that a meijer or a kroger offers. That would probably be my biggest complaint.

It’s possible that my opinion is informed by living here in the pandemic. My apartment building is surrounded by frats and other homes where many undergrads are congregating dangerously. The weekends can be very loud and the music starts at randomly early times (2-3 pm) on random days of the week. It’s not that close to the downtown restaurants so it’s a longer walk, a bike or car ride away. The plus is that delivery is really effective here.
