Basic Apartment Complex - Nice to be close to campus.

Apartment is rather basic. Management is kind of bad to work with. Nice to be close to campus. Has good access to public transportation.

Regents Park

This building has a very high concentration of UChicago students. This, there are multiple buses that run between the building and campus. 172 picks you up in front of the building and drops you off in front of Booth. It’s also free for UChicago students! The rent in the building ranges between 1500 and 2000 for one bedroom depending on the floor and whether it is fully renovated. Beautiful view and very convenient. Steps away from Metra and Bus 6 to go downtown.

Regents Review

My experience at Regents has been overwhelmingly positive. This may be due to the fact that I live on a low floor and do not have to use the elevators at all, which seems to be people's main concern with the building. My rent is relatively cheap (I have a roommate), my neighbors are quiet, repairs occur almost instantaneously, the building is safe, management has been responsive to me, there are 172 and 6 bus stops right outside the building, the building is walking distance from many grocery stores, restaurants, and bars, and the building has a gym.

Surely We Can All Do Better

For years, most 1L students have lived in Regents. They take advantage of this fact. Living in Regents is fine as long as you never ever need anything, because the staff is rude and terrible. But you will need things--because the building is ancient and everything breaks. One of the towers caught on fire last year. I've had repeat water damage. They put huge metal pillars in the inside of all of my windows to stabilize the building while working on the facade. The pillars were there for months and caused my ceiling to crumble. The laundry room is always flooding and I've repeatedly had things stolen there. The elevators don't work. My neighbors throw loud parties. Regents has a lot of government subsidized housing so you're paying thousands of dollars to live in an environment that doesn't really feel safe and where other people are paying way less and have very different incentives. They don't turn the air conditioning on until June--you have no control. They also determine when you can turn on your heat because it's building wide. I've had to have them spray for bugs numerous times, including cockroaches. Trust me, you can do better. Major upsides are it's not terribly expensive (though expensive for what it is) and it's close to campus--the 172, which is free for students, picks up literally just outside.

Review

I'm one of the only 2L's who stayed in Regents. A lot of folks can bad experiences but personally I've had a good one. Mac management is bad. And living on high floors the elevators are often slow. But the amenities are great - including a gym and a new convenience store, laundry, pool, grill you can order delivery from etc. The apartment itself is great with a nice view of the lake. I also have a walk in closet in addition to two other closets and tons of cabinet space.

Regents Park--mediocre

I had a good year at Regents Park. My roommate and I had a spacious apartment with a great view, and any issue we had regarding maintenance was fixed within 24 hours. The building looks old but if you don't mind that, I didn't really care. The biggest issue for us was the elevators, which were terrible. It was rare that all elevators in our tower were operating, and it was not usual to waits for the elevators (both going up and down) for 10 minutes. Otherwise, we had no problems. I do have friends (most of whom lived in the building's south tower), who encountered substantial problems. The elevators there at least once or twice were all out of commission (I once walked up 36 floors to deliver something to a friend there), and they had a tower-wide power outage that lasted several days. I had a good year there and appreciated being in a building with a lot of other law students, but I truly encourage the Admissions office or the students themselves to coordinate another building to focus on.

This apartment is awful

When I moved in it was clear that nobody had cleaned the apartment since the last tenant moved out.

Overall good apartment, but expensive and suffers maintenance issues

The apartment is good-sized, clean, and in a great location in the Hyde Park area. It has a dishwasher and laundry in the basement. Maintenance is fairly quick and responsive. And the building is surprisingly quiet - I never hear noise from my neighbors coming from my ceiling or walls.

The downsides are: the elevators are constantly down (usually 2, maybe only 1, work, out of 4 total; servicing 300 apartments with so few elevators creates huge waiting times); the garage for parking a car is expensive, very tight (people rub their cars all the time), and the garage door is always broken, leading to long wait times just to get out; the apartment is expensive overall, especially when you add in utilities; and I have seen roaches, especially in winter.

I love living near the university. I think it is very convenient for attending UChicago events. Most of our class lives here, so it makes it very easy for reunions and parties. I take the bus to the loop on the weekends. Living here does not mean you can't experience the loop fun. But people that live in the Loop usually don't come to our class parties because it is far away.
Hyde Park is a great neighborhood, especially for 1L year. There is plenty to do with new bars and restaurants -- and grocery stores, like Trader Joes -- coming in every year. While it's not as "happening" as the Loop or River North, for example, it's nice to be near the Law School as a 1L and most of your classmates will be in Hyde Park as well. I've lived in Hyde Park for 6 years now and can attest that it is very walkable and very safe, and it has a nice neighborhood feel that you don't get as much in the Loop or Loop-adjacent neighborhoods.
Pretty close to campus, about a 10 minute drive/bike ride. Seems safe, at least east of MLK Blvd. Pretty quiet overall, Maple Court is right next to an elementary school so there is some noise in the morning and when the kids are at recess. Hyde Park Produce is walkable, but not super close. Whole Foods is opening up at Lake Park around 51st/Hyde Park Blvd. soon. Large shopping area at 47th and Lake Park with Walgreens and Subway. Mostly fast food on 47th St. No bars, coffee shops, or anywhere nearby to hang out.
Hyde Park is extremely boring. I live here because the school is here and the commute is easy. There are very few good restaurants and no nightlife whatsoever. Luckily, getting downtown is cheap and easy. I've never felt unsafe during the daytime, but I certainly don't go walking around at night.
The neighborhood feels safe overall, as I live right on the border with Hyde Park. There is a dearth of businesses (stores, restaurants, bars) in the area, but that is true for all of Hyde Park. Proximity to the Law School is the best part of where I live.
My building is a 5 min walk to Whole Foods and 12 min walk to Target. Hyde Park is getting more restaurants and bars, but I wish there were better options. It is nice to be close to my friends and close to campus though.
It's a cute neighborhood, lots of young professionals, beautiful architecture, close proximity to school and super close to the city. Downside is few good food options and can get boring. But I love the free bus!
I've been a Chicago resident for most of my life, and I can safely say this is one of my favorite places to live. It's affordable and enjoyable.
