Okay-ish living experience

I lived at 736 Packard for the first two years at Michigan, and it's great that it's a 5 min walk to Ford and 7 min to Ross. It's also close to a May Mobility stop, so it's convenient for me to get downtown or to Kerrytown. However, it's an old building that's getting demo'd in May. There are always small issues (e.g., closet door hinge is broken, shades fell off), but maintenance is quick to respond. The electric door had a glitch so we had to leave the first fl door open, but the issue is that uninvited guests will come in and either steal packages or sleep in the laundry room (both have happened once). Good for small-medium sized pets.

Happy with Eladott

The rent is probably too much for what I have, but I live a five minute walk away from the law school. My apartment is fairly spacious, with a dishwasher and free laundry in the communal laundry room. The apartment came furnished at no extra cost to me. I could pay extra for a covered or uncovered parking spot.

The landlord is responsive to concerns, and the apartment and building are in good repair. The only downside is that because this area is so popular among undergrads, there are very loud parties in the neighboring houses on weekend nights in the fall and spring.

You are not getting your money’s worth

I only haven’t marked my apartment as “very bad” because I recently heard a true horror story from a fellow student. While there haven’t been any HUGE issues, there have been several minor inconveniences that do add up. There have been leaks under the kitchen and bathroom sinks - but after tightening the frame or replacing the faucet, I’ve been told to avoid getting the sink wet so that water doesn’t leak (how?). There’s a huge gnat problem - I’m a very clean person but had gnats from when I moved here during August until November (since the start of January, the gnats have inexplicably returned). One time my water heater emitted this horrible smell because one of the thermometers’ internal wiring burned (they did replace the thermostat quickly to be fair). The piping is poorly maintained and corroding. You can see cracks in the walls, gaps in the floorboards, and places where they just spot painted instead of doing an entirely new coat. The embedded window A/C unit is disgustingly filthy, and the paint around it is a mold magnet. You can hear your neighbors on every side. There are only two washers and dryers for the entire building (maybe 18+ units) and one of the washers was broken for 2-3 months. There were huge holes behind the floorboard radiators that I had to fill with steel wool. I caulked around my windows and some of the floorboards. There is a lot of smoking in the building even though there’s a “strict” no smoking policy and the lessor has been notified repeatedly of violations. This place is surrounded by frats so if you’re a grad student and don’t enjoy loud music, screaming, and hordes of people - don’t move here. Just don’t move here at all.

Great apartment but noisy

The building location is close to the law school & IM building. The building is kept clean and everything works great. Many apartments have dishwashers. The landlord is responsive and maintenance is fast. HOWEVER, the walls are extremely thin. You will be able to hear your neighbors opening and closing doors, cabinets, and when they are talking. Nearby undergrad houses blast music when it's nice outside, which might be annoying depending on who you are. If noise bothers you, don't live here. If you don't mind noise, it's a great apartment.

Spacious room and 5 minutes walk to Ross. However, the fixtures and bathroom are old and not clean.. Also, rooms located close to street may be noisy.

736 Packard

I am very happy with my apartment. It's an older building so it doesn't have some of the nicer amenities, but it is very close to Ross and came furnished. It's large for a studio and very convenient.

Woodbury Gardens is its own community - so we don't get a lot of surrounding neighborhood effect and it's quieter.

I haven't had to go to school in person yet (due to the pandemic) - but once things are back in person, I would use the community shuttle to get to campus and possibly back depending on the time of day I head back. Otherwise, I would take the bus or walk. Walking takes about 30 min but the bus will cut down most of that since there is a city stop right at the entrance to Woodbury.
Overall, a nice and quiet neighborhood that feels secure and is slightly removed from campus, so you're away from the hustle and bustle of the University. Definitely a grad student neighborhood. Close to public transit lines, and there is a nice grocery store near the apartment complex. Running trails are nearby, and road access to I-94 is pretty quick as well. Within an extended walk of campus, the Big House, and Ross. Really enjoy living here.
I like the convenience of getting to Ross in six minutes for class, group meetings, or coffee chats. It’s great to be able to come home and grab a quick bite before changing into a suit and walking back over. Easy walk to hockey games, and about 15 minutes to Bus/Big House. Well situated to make it to social gatherings at Skeeps, Rick’s, Munger, or any other place.
Woodbury is on the other side of Stadium Ave from Burns Park, but it's convenient access. The complex itself is pretty friendly; lots of law students around though it takes a bit of effort to get to know neighbors since everyone is on their own schedules and it's a generally older crowd.
Quiet neighborhood, many UMich grad students. Good availability of shops and amenities. Definitely has a more suburban feel than the areas closest to campus/downtown and not as many restaurants/bars nearby.
Quieter area with more families and not many undergraduate students. Still walkable to campus, but you probably won’t want to do the walk in the winter and need a car to get to grocery stores.
The neighborhood has everything you need (grocery, coffee, pharmacy, etc.) and is close to the Big House. It is farther away from downtown's bars, restaurants, and other amenities.
Safe, albeit there have been bicycle theft issues. It is quiet here in the community. Walking distance to UM Stadium, not far from Whole Foods, Trader Joes, Plum Market, etc...
