Garrett West

A little further away from Duke (same distance as Alden Place) but much cheaper than the closer locations. Right off of 15 501 so easy access to groceries and other shopping/restaurants. The pool area is beautiful, the apartments are very nice, and there is a theater room and a gym. Not the best gym I've seen, but usually very few people in it so it's easy to get any equipment you want. They have a few big social events every year, and management is easy to reach. Overall great option for those looking to spend less on rent, as long as you have a car or can carpool (currently no good public transportation options to get to Duke!).

Garrett West

Beautiful apartments and great management company! The only downside is not being in the same area as the majority of Fuqua students. I moved with my partner who is not a student, so we wanted a quality apartment that was a little less 'college' feeling and Garrett West definitely offers that.

Great spot at Garrett West

We have enjoyed our time at Garrett West, the staff is nice and very responsive and the community is very peaceful. In the summer, spending time in at the pool or the playground with our little one has been a highlight of our time here. Valet trash is a requirement you have to pay for but it is nice to be able to leave your trash just outside your front door and have some grab it 5 times a week. Our flat is spacious has got all the main amenities so we are very comfortable here. Our only complaint has been that one of our bedrooms has a constant draft which has made it hard to keep it completely warm in the winter - this seems to be unique to our flat however and not the entire complex.

Family-friendly but some cases of car break-ins

We love living here. The only negative is that our car was once broken into but nothing stolen. We heard our neighbors complain about the same. Everything else about the community is spectacular.

Great place to live, with very reasonable prices

We really enjoyed our time here. It's about a 10 minute drive from campus and significantly cheaper than anything you'll find near campus (Station 9, B9, etc.)

Great Experience

My wife and I have had a great experience at Garrett West. We live in a one bedroom apartment with a patio. The apartment is very open and is the perfect size for a couple. There are large windows that let in lots of sunlight. The apartment community is very diverse - from students to families to retirees. The pool is nice and they have communal grills that we have used in the past. The management is great. We've had very few issues, but the issues that have come up have been handled quickly. We were also excited because they offer shorter lease terms, in case you do not plan to be in Durham over the summer. They also offered a great move-in special. The downsides of the complex are that you need a car to live here, it is about 10 minutes to 9th Street area, it is not a very walkable area, and the walls are thin. With that said, if you're looking for a low-key, affordable, and well-maintained apartment, this is a great option.

I have not been through the neighborhood very much, but from what I have seen, the residential side of Garrett Road (west of the Garrett Road / Durham-Chapel Hill Blvd intersection) is quiet and safe. The other side of the intersection however - and even the strip mall on the corner across from the Toyota dealership - is a bit rougher and more commercial of an area.
The location is right of US Highway 15 501. There are numerous shopping options located off of this road. The location also provides easy access to both Durham and Chapel Hill as well as Interstate 40. Also, the trails of Duke Forest are located just west of the property. All of these are positives. The negatives would be that a car is basically required to get anywhere.
There's nothing special nearby, you're kind of isolated, and have to drive to go anywhere fun. But, it's a safe residential neighborhood which is personally what I care about.
Great location between Durham and Chapel Hill. About a 10 min drive to school. Not gated and open air entry ways, so does not feel the most secure at times, but have not had any issues.
It’s very quiet; though, there have been car break ins at GW and other apartments in the area.
This is a very nice neighborhood,. There are many stores close by (driving distance), grocery store, gas station, restaurants, home depot, bed bath and beyond, target, etc., that make it convenient.

There are also 3 schools nearby, less than 5 minutes drive.
There's a Sam's and Super Target and Harris Teeter within 5min. Trader Joe's is 10-15min down 15-501, and the med school is about 10-12min away as well. More suburban with a running trail within a 2min run.
The neighborhood has a lot of traffic, but this community is relatively private, and surrounded by trees, so much of the neighborhood's effects are mitigated.
