3 Roommates
One of the few options for 3 roommates. The third room is quite small but definitely livable.

Old apartment, average management/maintenance, overpriced
The apartment itself is okay, very clearly an old place but with some more recent additions so the bathroom and kitchen are decent. The walls and floors are thin and you can hear everytime a neighbor opens or closes their door or the front door. A/C is through a window unit and heating is centrally controlled, which means you have no control over the heat in the winter. My apartment is often horribly hot in the winter and I have to leave the window open.
When I first moved in, the property/site manager was terrible and maintenance requests took weeks to be addressed. A new manager came in in fall and things have slightly improved since then, but it still takes about a week to solve major (but non-emergency) maintenance issues.
They are way overpriced due to the location, but there are few spots closer to the hospital so they can charge ridiculous prices. I'll be moving out at the end of my lease since the problems I've had here seem to be more stressful than a longer commute.

Cheap, Close, and Comfortable
While Island Drive certainly isn't luxurious, we've found the apartment to meet all of our needs! It is close to the hospital and our friends, is a short uber or walk to downtown, and is inexpensive so that we can spend our money on our other priorities such as dining and traveling. The management is responsive to maintenance requests and our neighbors are friendly. We'll be here for all 4 years of medical school for sure!

Med Student Island Drive
Affordable, close to the hospital, parking guaranteed, and close to all other medical students in the white coat area.

Cheap Housing
Although Island Drive can sometimes have a bad reputation, I have yet to have an issue with them. Maintenance has been incredibly quick and arrived within 10 minutes of me notifying them of a bathroom leak. Other minor issues have all been handled within a week. Sidewalks are plowed and it’s a nice walk to the hospital. These are older apartments and aren’t as fancy as some of the other options, but you can’t beat the price for being this close to the hospital. There isn’t in-unit laundry, but each building has pay-to-use washer and dryer in the basement. However, these don’t do the best of job cleaning clothes and I find it more efficient to do my laundry elsewhere.

Just Okay
Apartment location is nice for proximety to medical school, but not close to anything else (shops, restaurants, coffee shops, grocery stores, etc.).
Apartment size/included utilities is nice for the price (for Ann Arbor standards).
Kitchen is small.
Bathroom is nice.
New carpet is nice.
Apartment was not clean when I moved in. Spent two days deep cleaning windows, kitchen, cabinets, bathroom, floors, etc.
Not great administrative skills and organization from management. Poor communication skills. Not very responsive to concerns/correspondence, especially by email.
All people that work there are kind, including maintenance workers.
Storage is limited.
Curb appeal is lacking.
Heat in bedroom is subpar, especially in Michigan winters.
Windows not very good quality.

Top-Notch Management
Management not top notch, the workers often change.
Respond well to maintenance requests, though once had an issue where it was delayed.
Apartments are older but much cheaper than nearby complexes, and still in good condition. Lots of windows!
10 minute walk to the med school, and right next to a bus stop.
Parking, gas, heat, water, gym, small pool all included in the rent.
There is a coin-operated washer and drier shared between the 6 units in each building. There is also a storage room in the basement.

Not many issues
The maintenance people are slow to fix things, but other than that I haven't had any issues. They just remodeled with new carpet and flooring before I moved in, so that was nice!

Adequet
While not the flashiest of apartments or complexes, it is functional, safe, and located very close to the medical school. I like that a mixture of students, residents, and families all live there. This is not my dream apartment, but it is perfectly functional with new appliances and a means to an end. While I like its proximity to the medical center, it is a significant walk to cafes and restaurants. I do, however, appreciate easy access to secure running paths, and there is a gym on site. For those moving from big cities like New York and Chicago, this is bigger, cleaner, and more functional than anywhere you've lived before.

Comfortable apt, not amazing, not awful
If you are looking to live in the White Coat Area in a 1 bedroom apt, Island Drive is the most affordable (however I still think it's overpriced - but - that's most of Ann Arbor). Parking is great, with spaces right in front of your building (HUGE plus for Ann Arbor), and I've never had a problem not finding a spot during any time of the day. The buildings are a bit older so you have to lower your expectations a bit if you are comparing these apartments to some of the newer built high-rises downtown. Everything works great for the most part, and maintenance has been very helpful if I submit a request. It's very close to the med school/hospital (10-15 minute walk), but walking downtown to central campus is a bit of a hike. Some downsides are the relatively thin walls and floors (I can hear neighbors talking, walking above me, etc however this isn't in an undergraduate area so there haven't been issues with loud parties or things like that). Overall I like living here and am staying for the next year.
**One tip I would like to share: for some odd reason, the management company for Island Drive does their application process differently than practically every other place I've lived in AA. When you apply, you give your PREFERENCE on apt layout (1 Bd/2bd, which floor you want) and location (front of complex, back, which building), and after you sign all the paperwork and pay your deposit, you then get ASSIGNED a unit on your move in day. This did not sit well with me because I wanted to view and sign for the specific apartment I would be living in (which practically every other management company usually does). After some back and forth with management (who were very nice and polite through the whole thing), they finally did allow me to sign the paperwork for the specific unit I would get. I don't know why they do it this way, so if this is something that bothers you, take that into consideration when deciding.
